Deep inserts and #3

I just got my 3r mag 72 case back from Ollie's. I had them work it over to include time certing the head studs. They ended up putting "deep inserts" in the two outboard studs at #3 and adding a thick weld bead on the outside of the case.

I'm not familiar with this mod and Ollie's price list doesn't doesn't list the procedures. I'm not second guessing the need. I just want to know a little more about it. Can anyone shed some light?
