Main oil galley plugs

What's the best solution for replacement plugs? I hear the new plugs form Porsche are too large. Is this true? Is a pipe plug the best alternative? I recently enlarged my center main to go with my grooved bearing from Henry and cross drilled crank. I knocked the plugs out to flush the block and now need to install a replacement.

Thanks

Main oil galley plugs

I think I had to turn down the factory plugs the threaded plugs are too deep to work.

Here are the two don't remember but I may have just made my own plug it was for an RSR case I was working on. The factory plug here is .870

I like screw in pipe thread style plugs.
They are positive leak control...removable to service...and easier to install (depth control).
If you use the allen key style plugs...they can be very shallow and are available in several different metals.

Problem with the plug in this area if it's where I think he is putting it, there is an oil passage right behind the plug that would be covered if a threaded plug was used.

I have actually only removed the front plug and don't see any need to remove the rear.
Could the front be tapped with no issues?

There is no room for a threaded plug in either end.

I have been chasing oil leaks from a PO threading the oil galleys in a 4 cylinder. The guy did a lousy job of threading. Best bet is to not remove the plugs, second best go through the pain of fitting plugs, third thread for plugs. That is my opinion and what I practiced on my last race engine.

I had no issues with the large size front and rear oil gallery plugs from the Porsche dealer, fit perfect. It was the smaller ones, top and behind fan, that did not fit and those were easily threaded for screw plugs. This was for 2.7 mag case though.

You can make a screw plug work on the front main gallery, but you have to be very careful. I figured out a way to know how deep in I was screwing the plug, and marked the outside so I could get it just right, and then ground a groove into the inside of the plug so it wouldn't partially obstruct the opening on the side. Seems to work fine.

If I had a lathe, maybe I'd just replug. For that matter, a guy could make his own with a lathe, couldn't he? But, alas, I don't have room for a lathe.

I went the factory plugs which measure in about .002-3 over the factory hole... has anyone installed these? Heat, dry ice, 574??? Any tips on installation.

Thanks

If you install a push fit plug...by all means freeze it first.
If it becomes a push fit with fingers or light push with tool...then you probably have the correct fit.
A little sealer would not be overkill.
And Walt...yes...a lathe is the answer....have had several over the years...makes a great addition to the shop...and being cheap like me...I make all sorts of things to save money or just move projects along without the need to wait for parts.
