sump plate oil leak question plsss?
Hey guys ive got a easy question I think? Ive wondered why there is 2 gaskets to replace when working on the sump plate, seems to me this would cause oil leaks?
My other guestion is if im constantly getting a small oil leak down there where the sump plate is why not use a little liquid gasket sealer with the paper gaskets, can this be done?? Just scratching my head on this , any replies would be appreciated. \ \thanks Damian |

One gasket above the screen, one below. You need them both.

oil sump plate
wow I cant believe im asking this question but what screen, all I can remember is removing the small nuts and the plate comes off and that's it, is there more? if so what am I missing??

You haven't told us what year your engine is. It's important we know this, because good answers can only come from good questions. In this case, there are 2 different screens, depending on the year of the engine. Both will work, but it's always best to consider the original part first.
BTW, the picture above shows the wrong orientation for the drain plug hole in the sump plate. It ALWAYS goes to the side, NOT the front or rear. The Cap'n Last edited by The cap'n; 08-01-2014 at 07:35 AM.. |

1983 takes the late screen. They're a bit difficult to find, and mostly expensive. PM me for a possible source at a reasonable price.

Venturi sump screen........

You probably need one like these for your engine. ![]() ![]() I'll be needing two (2) sump screens for the engines I am rebuilding and got an extra one. Bought them a while back from Tom Butler and they are not easy to find when you need one. Tony |

old thread revival!
I have almost 5k miles on my rebuild and I have a leak at my sump. Not the gasket though, my leak is the studs. Oil is coming down the threads. I assume that I need to use new nylocks and crush washers to remedy this but I was thinking.... So there are 8 studs and I can imagine that the gaskets could contribute to oil finding their way down the studs but I seem to recall some of them were exposed all the way to the crankcase and some were not completely drilled and tapped all the way thru. If I was going to split the case again in the near future, I would look into JB weld or something like that to seal off the stud holes completely. Has anyone done this and is it recommended? Seems like it would prevent some of these leaks but maybe there are consequences that I'm not seeing.

I don't recall any "through" studs on my car's sump plate, but who knows.
If you in fact have some stud holes that go all the way through, I would remove the studs, clean the threads and JB weld them back in. I would not put JB inside the motor. I use a very small amount of CurlT on those gaskets and found that it helps keep things dry.

The sump plates distort with time. If it is not flat it will leak.
I hammered mine flat, then sanded it smooth. New gaskets, dry, and only apply the torque specified. It does not leak. I think the dry gaskets expand a little when they get oil on the edge causing some swelling and form a better seal. |

I didn't find resolution with my leak until i replaced all the nylock nuts and crush washers with new items. The stud threads 'cut' the nylon lock in the nut so you really can only put them on and tighten 1 time.
Even after i used new nuts and washers i still had one that would form a drop on the end of the stud after a few hours. I ended up using some silicon sealant on the exterior threads that protrude past the nylock nuts. That was the final solution and its now been dry on the sump plate for about two weeks. Just updating here for future reference. I still think there might be something to the stud holes going all the way thru to the sump. If i find myself back inside the case I'll be sure to pay attention to it.
