Cam sprocket flanges
I believe I know the answer, but wanted to ask the board, which has significantly more knowledge than I. I have 2 different sprocket flanges and am unsure if it matters which side they go on. The pictures I have seen either show the same flange on both sides, or the "enclosed" flange on either the right or left.
Does it matter which side these 2 flanges go on? This is for a 2.2L 911T cams. Thanks Bob ![]() Last edited by bobolsn; 09-30-2014 at 11:44 AM.. |

Those are from two different engines. The enclosed ones were on the early engines, and later Porsche switched to the open ones.
Doesn't matter which side. While this may be unusual, it shouldn't matter in general either, so not to worry. |

Cam sprockets
Walt,
I have read many of your posts over the years (here and the old Rennlist forum) and I GREATLY appreciate and respect your perspective and opinion. A Porsche mechanic owned the car before I purchased in 1983, so who knows what he did. He probably had access to many parts from various years. Another question - last night I was testing techniques to align the sprockets (straight edge placement measurements, etc.) and noted that there was noticeably more end float on the right cam shaft then on the left. I tried to search the forum for "Cam end float" with no luck. Does it matter that there is this difference in the end float? The cam thrust plate, gasket and o-ring were installed and right vs. left cam shafts are in the proper bore. Again thank you. Bob |

In the alignment, you need to torque down and do the measurement, there shouldn't be any end float when nut is tight.
Both types of back spacers work the same way. I just did a 934 cam in a build and both sides had the early style. I have seen the notch style wipe if the cam freezes in the carrier. The set pin wipes the half circles I doubt that would happen with the solid units. Bruce |

Sprockets
As with Walt I have read many of your posts/responses and greatly appreciate your time and input.
Last night I went out to investigate the "end float". As you mentioned the nuts were not tight (just finger tight). I did find that there was binding on the right side sprocket flange. The left side just slipped right on. I polished the left flange and it went on the cam shaft smoothly. Now I have to purchase the 46 mmm crow's foot socket to tighten prior to alignment and timing. Again, thank you for your input. As a result, I am making slow progress. Bob |
