New Glyco Inner IMS Bearings - unusable?
Has anyone else been receiving new Glyco inner IMS bearings that are dinged up? (p/n 996.101.435.70)
I've bought two new pairs now, one on the classifieds board and one directly from Pelican, and both arrived with scrapes and dings in the bearing surfaces. This appears to be due to the bearing halves rattling around inside the box during shipping, with no packing material to keep them separate. My mechanic deemed the first pair unusable, and while the second pair (from Pelican) have much less damage, I'm still wondering if I need to exchange them until I get a perfect, undamaged set (I haven't had these checked out yet).

Are you sure the marks are not simply cosmetic? Maybe you could post a picture. But, by all means, I expect a new bearing set to be properly packaged and to not have any defects, not even cosmetic.

I'll try to get a photo. Hopefully my camera's macro setting can pick up the marks.
I guess that's my real question... would you use a bearing with a mark of any kind? I'm inclined to say no, but I have zero experience to back that up.

I would not use a marked bearing!
This reminds me of an experience I had trying to get a useable crank for a 2001 Ducati 748R from Ducati ($1600.00 dealer cost) - it took three tries before they sent one without blems on the rod bearing journal area! |

I definitely wouldn't use the first set, the small pits might lead to flaking/ delaminating. The second set might be useable if you could clean it up with scotch brits, but it's a new bearing and shouldn't need to be cleaned up.
You might want to call Steve Weiner and get his expert opinion. He can probably also sell you a set,and if he has these in stock, I'm sure he would inspect them before sending them to you. Might be a little more money but you would probably be able to sleep at night.

Yes I recieved bad ones to. They were not packed properly so they dinged themselves to death. I had to order genuine from porsche dealer.

Well here's a new set from 11-2013. Looks like one side is ok.
Interesting that they've stopped chamfering the oil passage. They still come loose in the box. ![]() ![]()

Yeah I agree that's super annoying that they allow the bearings to ding each other while they bounce around in the box. You can knock off the edges of the dings by scraping with your fingernail. The metal is so soft that it doesn't take much force to clean off the ding material with your nail.
Regarding the chamfer you could easily chamfer it with a small countersink bit and clean up the edges with a mini fine tooth file. If you look at the older bearings with the chamfer you'll see it's not a super precise job that is done to them. So no harm doing it yourself carefully. That said, I don't think it's fair we should have to do that. The bearings should be good to go right out of the box, literally.

Agreed. This pair would probably be OK to use, but we really shouldn't have to accept "probably good enough" for any engine bearings.
I'll be returning them and ordering the genuine porsche bearings. Hopefully they turn out ok.

This has been going on for a while as Glyco seemed to have forgotten to wrap the bearings before putting them in the box....

Glyco used to shrink wrap the bearings. They sure have gone down hill in the past few years.

They still shrink wrap the mains and rods, all in a stacked group. They don't shrink the individual bits for the intermediate shaft.

Don't shake the box when they arrive. I've seen a few people do that and I cringe every time.
I guess it costs too much to wrap two little important bearings. Lol |
