Can't get my 88 engine to drop

I have followed all the info to drop my 88 Carrera engine. All that I can see holding it are the four bolts into the transmission. Can't find the sweet spot to be able to move the engine back off those bolts, engine moves left and right and bolts are wiggling, but no action to the rear. Am I missing something? More than one of us has checked around the engine and we don't see anything else.

Ideas?

By four bolts do you mean the four studs with nuts (removed of course) that connect the engine to the transmission bellhousing? If so, it sounds like you're trying to leave the transmission in the car and just pull the engine alone. That's tough to do on an '88 (I assume it's a 911, not a turbo) because the G50 cross shaft that connects the clutch fork to the trans has to be removed. Removing that shaft with the trans in the car is a challenge to say the least.

Drop them as a unit!! Much easier to do and then re-install.

Don't split it in car, everything on table together pull the cross shaft fit the clutch, now it will come apart

Thanks KTL, Jcslocum, and Flat6pac; it is a 911 Carrera with G50; will change plan and drop engine and transmission as a unit.

+1 don't split in the car - did you disconnect the shift rod?

There must be Pelicans nearby that can come take a look if you want other eyes on the project. Did you complete the drop at this point?

A first pass check I thought of but haven't used.
Get a length of thin strong rope - attach at both ends on either side of the car and see if you can pass the complete rope "over" the engine and trans starting at the trans or engine end. That process will capture all the wires, clutch slave hose, fuel lines, shift connection/etc. Push the trans rod in the trans and shift the lever to 2 or 4th, I think (pull the the mechanism from inside to more inside). Check all this trans link process by taking the cover off behind the seats and centered inside the car. If all this is completed you should be able to lower the engine and trans very close to straight down if the car is flat.
