Hi Matt,
Fantastic? Back in the car this weekend? :) Cheers, Harry. |
I'll be doing well if I get it on the engine stand this weekend.

2.4 Barrels and Pistons
Don't want to hijack the thread but hoping for some words of wisdom.
I have a 1972 911T 2.4 MFI , completely stock, working through some issues with it, and getting it as good as I/we can. MFI has been rebuilt and is perfect, top end split down and found the reason why I have repeated gas in the oil issues, 6 oval barrels way over spec for a simple ring job. engine done has about 110K miles) So Ive studied the Porsche PET , and there seems to be a lot of choices of parts for barrels and pistons. Mahle seem a good and fair priced option but What would have been the original part in there ( Not sure what Group 5 and 6 means - enlightenment would help) and what are the recommendations for new pistons-barrels and rings . I'm not a rich man and this will be a regular driver not racer. Help much appreciated as always. Cheers from the UK Dave |

Im looking at a new set of pistons and barrels as they are oval.
Looking at the Pet Im confused as to what each Part difference is, when hunting down prices there is a wide variation. Can anyone enlighten me. Tried to search the web to see if any better explanations can be found and had no success Part PCG 503 1890 Cylinder with piston complete FA Mahle only by sets 911T-E T-V Part PCG 503 1590 Cylinder with piston complete FA Mahle only by sets 911T-E T-V Part 91110394001 Cylinder with piston complete group 5 911 T-K Part 91110394002 Cylinder with piston complete group 6 911 T-K Part 91110394205 Cylinder with piston complete group 5 Schmidt 911 T-K Part 91110394206 Cylinder with piston complete group 6 Schmidt 911 T-K Finally idiots question but Im going to ask it anyway. Could I stick in the 911S Pistons and Barrels and run it without changing anything else ? Cheers from UK Dave |

Thanks Henry. It should be fully assembled as soon as some MFI hardware arrives. Picks to follow.

I know it is getting close to turkey day, but I did not know that you had to check the temp on a engine also.
Seriously, what is being checked with the gauge? Piston to cylinder clearance? What are the tolerances? How do you "zero' the gauge? Just wondering. Quote:

Cam timing I believe

Henry - looks great! just out of curiousity, how did you get the oil pump and timing housing and covers etc so sparkling clean? bead-blased?

Our sonic cleaner (at 911 Vintage Parts) is large enough for a complete engine case. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1449071525.jpg |
I've got it mostly assembled now but am waiting for a few odds and ends to finish. The distributor needs to be set and the wires need to be routed. There is a little more work on the wiring and hoses too. I've got to find my pics of the throttle shaft so I can reassemble it (the throttle stack isn't bolted on yet) I've also got to figure out how to fill the MFI pump with oil :)
