New 2.45 Engine Build
 
Just pulled the trigger on the build. I was going to go stock but some extra torque is always nice. What do you think?

2.2E case,case savers,oil squirters, oil bypass mod, line bore tba after inspection
SC oil pump with flow mod
86mm AA Biral cylinders w/Nikasil coating and JE 9.5:1 pistons
70.4mm crank and rods
E cams
rebuilt heads
ARP rod bolts
rebuilt MFI pump calibrated for 2.45 and rebuilt throttle bodies
new bearings, chains,guides,gaskets of course

Appreciate the input Steve. As long as they work like they should I'm okay :) I'm not expecting 100k out of them. Mahle's prices are just too steep.

I've got pretty much this same build sitting on my shelf as I slowly acquire the parts. But I'm using Weber 40 IDAs instead. Subscribed...

I really want to do an EFI set-up one day. The cost of rebuilding the MFI would have paid for most of it. Maybe next time.

I absolutely love this engine concept.
Not everyone has the budget to build without regard to cost so I see this as the best bang for the buck.
The last two engines I built for my own cars followed this design. 86mm is the perfect size cylinder when performance and reliability are the end game. No case modifications so a "numbers matching" collectable can always be converted back if the owner so desires.
The Nikasil coated Biral barrels (Nascar developed) are proving to be remarkably durable and seem to offer the cooling necessary to run these engines at their limit.
My engine were both built using Mod "S" cams because I prefer a more aggressive power band (changing with age) but the "E" cams have been a favorite for their driveabilty forever.
As a Mod "S" engine these little guys make 180 RWHP with exceptional throttle response.
It will be a pleasure watching this project go together.

Probably a carb specific cam and a GT1 blueprinted oil pump.

I bought a 73.5T Cis core that arrived damaged (fan housing). I could probably use it but then found a '71 T case in really good condition. I figure it's not really stressed and this whole 7R obsession is a little overblown. So a 5R case will be fine for my modest little build.

Technically I don't have a chassis to put it in and am just building it because I want to build a 911 engine. Though is will likely end up in one of my several 914-4s unless some 911 roller gets dropped in my lap.

I've got a silly amount of parts in my barn, so I could put the actual engine in any number of chassis and build up around it.

PS. While the factory did this once or twice, I got the idea from an article about one of Henry's engines.

I can understand building an engine without a home. I got my build plan from Henry too. He will be supplying parts and assembly skills. My time will be taken up getting the rest of the car ready if I ever get the pan replacement finished.

Here is a twin plug (Burnham Performanve dist) version of the 2.45 with SSI heater boxes and M&K muffler.
Note the cool sump cover also made by Burnham Performance.

No upsell or sell of any kind for that matter. :)

I've built a bunch of these little engines and I just love them. If my experience can point someone in a direction that is cost effective and great fun, everyone wins.

Who does the Nickasil coatings for this setup from AA?

I'm thinking of using the AA stuff with 9.5:1 pistons on my 2.7 rebuild (budget reasons) and hadn't heard of coating new cyls.

AA does not sell coated cylinders in these smaller sizes. You have to buy them and send them out.
US Chrome and Millennium are the two companies that we have found for this process.
At this point Supertec may be the only company selling new Biral cylinders treated in this fashion.
We also sell used Mahle Biral cylinders reconditions to use factory and JE pistons.

Question for Henry
 
I have a 71T with a 2.2T motor with E cams and pistons running Zenith carbs. I haven't had a chance to drive it yet as it's not quite done. So of course I'm already thinking of more power. :) A friend has made the offer of a 2.7 core for dirt cheap that I'm thinking of using as a starting point to build a motor with a little more go power than the 2.2. I would build this while driving the 71 and swap motors when I got it done.

With the 2.7 as a base, what's the most economical build to end up with something around that 180 hp mark. I'd like to keep the Zeniths if I can make them run well. Can a 2.45 be built on the 7R case or are the spigots too big? How would a 2.5 short stroke with a 66mm crank compare to the 2.45 above?

A great engine to build using the 2.7 as a base platform is a variation of the 2.7 RS spec engine.
You already have most of what you need.
Do the machine work required for a stable bottom end (plenty of information on the forum), install CaseSavers and good studs, replate the 90mm cylinders, buy 9.5:1 JE pistons. Port the heads to 36mm, select the cams that suit your sensibilities (I like Mod"S" but Solex, Mod Solex and "E" cams will also make a reasonably fun engine) and rejet the Zeniths. This can be a challenge but making the Zeniths work has been done.
The reason for building a 2.45 is to use the 4R case without boring the spigots which creates a poor platform for reliability.
If you have a 7R case, build a 90mm motor.
