Can the early chain tensioner be rebuilt?

It is part number 901 105 050 01. I can push the piston in with my hand- not good. Also, the top half of the tensioner came apart by taking off the top snap ring. How do you get the bottom half a part? Does it come a part?

Thanks,

Yes, there is a thread I have read on here. PP sells the kits. Be sure to get the guards for the tensioners..great insurance.

The early tensioners can be rebuilt but it's not a great idea. the real issue surrounding early tensioner failure is a propensity for the idler/ tensioner arm to bind on the shaft causing the tensioner to fail. The cure for this binding is to run a wider tensioner arm with bushings. The early tensioners do not allow for the installation of these updated arms.
You can buy factory updated arms or you can have your arms updated by Supertec for less than half the price.
