Help understanding the 2.0 Eng ??

I thought that the 2.0 in a 914 was a 4cyl eng .. then I read an article saying a guy installed a 2.0 6cyl eng in his 914 .. I thought the first Porsche 6cyl eng was the 2.2 I'm confused .. can someone school me on this eng THE 2.0 ... Thanks

Yes in a 914 2.0 it is a 4 cylinder. But in a 914-6 it is 2.0 liter 6 cylinder. 6 cylinder 2.0 liter engines started with the 1965 911 and was used through 1969. First were aluminum case then switched to magnesium in mid 68 I believe. 1970 came the 2.2 in the 911 but I believe all 914-6's were 2 liters.

914-4 used the four cylinder type IV engine from VW. 914-4 came in 3 displacements at one point or another in its lifetime- 1.7 liters, 2.0 liters, 1.8 liters.

914-6 used a de-tuned 2.0 liter 911T motor to prevent it from being faster than the 911. The 911 engine started in 1964 at 2.0 liters. In 1970 it was increased to 2.2 liters with a larger bore. In 1972 it was increased to 2.4 liters with a longer stroke. A larger bore again gave 2.7 liters for the Carrera RS 2.7, and on and on and on to the 4.0 liter 997 GT3 RS.

Sorry Guys I could have posted this thread in the wrong forum But I did it because of the Quick reply ..the 914 side are very slow .. must because of the eng size in the cars ...LOL .. I'm faced with having to sell my 911's and go to a 914 and that seems to be a totally different world .. Because of the VW engs and the Porsche engs and 4cyls ,6 cyls V8 s .. I'm having to reschool myself .. I'm working at picking up a 914 that has a 2.0 eng in it I don't know if it is a 4 or 6 cyl But it won't turn over (seized) .. Now I'm faced with either put the $$$ into fixing the 2.0 or Put my 930 3.3 Turbo and 4sp into it .. It's not a stock 914 .. It's 914 chalon that has been modified with all the 911S running gear .. that's why I thought that the 2.0 maybe a 6cyl not a 4 cyl .. So I'm stuck trying to make up my mind what to do .. Go with the Turbo or fix the 2.0 .. WHAT WOULD YOU DO ???? Feedback ..

I replied to your other thread. How much money do you have to spend? Are you doing the work yourself?
Cheapest bet is to rebuild the 4 cylinder that is in it or get another to replace it with. VW motors are cheap. Any other option is very expensive.

I would have to spend the $$$ in getting the 2.0 fixed (rebuilt) so would it be better for me to put that money in making the Turbo to fit ?? already have the eng and trans .. ??

It is not that simple, like I said in the other post. You will spend a LOT LESS MONEY fixing the 4 banger, or getting a new one.

How about doing some research on your own about how much these few things will cost you.... (edit: check Patrick Motorsports for conversion parts prices) Here is the "bare minimum" list I sent to our customer who want to put his 2.4 liter motor into a 914....

914-6 sheet metal kit
914-6 engine mount conversion
914-6 chassis stiffening kit
914-6 oil system with filter console, filler, lines etc. (aftermarket)
914-6 header system WITHOUT heat (add approx. $1250 for heat exchangers)
914-6 muffler
914-6 shift rod setup
Rear coil overs to support additional weight with minimum 140# springs
914-6 throttle cable adaptation
Fuel Pump
MSD ignition system

You may not need all of this but more then likely you will, plus more.

Bottom line is how much money/time do you have to spend, cause this not be cheap.

Lets also mention that the transmission on the 930 motor won't work either, not without serious modification unless you like going hella fast in reverse...

Thanks JJK78-951 for the info .. I just didn't know that it was that much work .. Didn't think you could get very much power from the 2.0 so that's why I was looking at my turbo eng.. Plus was I told by the guy sell that the 2.0 has 40 webers but needs a bigger cam .. what's your thoughts ?

There is plenty of info on the internet on ways to get a lot of power from the Type 4 VW motor, and you already have Some 40MM Weber carbs. For a start, Google "VW type 4 motor tuning".
Pretty sure the 914 came with a Porsche trans from the Factory.
Since there is no way to tell where you live from your posts, it's rather hard to point you to someone that can give you help with building the VW 2.0 motor.
