Elephant's Foot

As we have been making Forged Rockers for about the last year and also make our own Titanium Valve Spring Retainers with a TiC Coating we thought it was time we looked at the 'Elephant's Foot' Adjuster.

There are a few aftermarket adjusters available but they are all based on the standard design and will all have a similar weight to the standard part.

We have looked at hollowing out the basic screw which gives a small saving in weight - around 15% of the total which in terms of inertia is probably worthwhile on 8000rpm+ 2.0 Litre FIA race Engines which are the reason we produced the forged rocker in the first place.

We are making these adjusters in an H13 Tool Steel with rolled threads and the balls/cups will be superfinished prior to assembly.

Adjustment will be made using a 4mm Allen key and we will make a Grade 2 Titanium Lock Nut for a little more weight saving.

Chris, these are very cool, well done contributing to our hobby!

I often wondered why no one has built a rocker with a roller follower. It seems a natural solution to the low zinc oil situation, would allow more aggressive cam ramps for better performance with stock pistons (although why not bump compression "while you're in there"), and open the door for many more cam options. Thoughts?

This has been debated before and there is a relatively long thread here:

Roller Rockers Anyone ????

I am not convinced that the benefits would be very significant and they would never be allowed in Historic Race Engines which is our main interest.

Another thumbs up to Chris at Fenn Lane for his continued efforts in modernizing some of the parts that go into these old cars.

Do you have a price and delivery time for the complete 12 adjusters?

We are just making a few simple samples to test fit and make sure that they work correctly with our forged rockers and that all the adjustments work out.

These samples should be ready early next week and we will then place a PO to manufacture a batch of these parts.

I expect delivery to be about 3 weeks and the question then is how long will it take for us to install a set in a Race Engine and test them for at least one race.

The engine we will fit them to revs to around 8500rpm.

We have an engine to build so I would believe 2-3 months wouldn't be unreasonable.

The price we are targeting is $32.50 each which is about the same as a genuine Porsche component and I see now reason why this will need to increase.

We have just finalised the last details for the Elephant's Foot design and will start manufacture in the next few days.

We are also making the lock nut with 12mm AF, single chamfer in Grade 5 Titanium

Price will be $30 each complete with the locknut.

We have also taken the decision to manufacture Valve Guides in one of the modern, high performance materials.

We are going to use either Colsibro or Trojan (not the same meaning in the UK ).

http://www.columbiametals.com/products/trademark-alloys/colsibro-trademark-alloy

I realise that may engine builders don't think this is worthwhile but it can't hurt as the heat transfer is around 50% better than Manganese Bronze.
