Good info sir. I just looked up the part number for the exhaust stud and it is the same as the oil pump stud. And lists the same size. At least I know I ordered the correct one. Thanks. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Disassembly Done ... Time To Rebuild 3.0
Back from vacation and I'm ready to go. I think I have most items I need to keep me going for a while. Got my replacement stud while I was away.
Also got this cool package. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...c6e497798a.jpg JE pistons from ebs. And they are domed for cis. See... http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...5c9769eb54.jpg Also got these. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...21bec32e6a.jpg Replated in nikasil by ebs. Also got these polished and rebushed from Craig a while back. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...6ad9114eff.jpg Cams are with John for a regrind and head are at the local machine shop that does them for some of the indies in my area. Now just need some time to work! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
wow, cylinders look new!

Yes. Not sure how they did that. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Long time no see Matt! Looking good, ill be sending my cylinders to EBS next month for the 3.4L treatment.

That car you have is perfect as is. Guess you can't leave well enough alone. Very happy with EBS. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Valve guides are toast (1qt>600mi) and i dont trust the rebuild that the previous owner had done. Splitting the case and 'while your in there' decided to just do the 3.4L.. cost wasnt really much more expensive if i have to replace the 3.2L p&c's which is probably prudent considering the mileage...lol. Atleast i'm not doing an LS swap :D

Do I have to use loctite for the oil pump stud into the case?

Ugh. Getting my hardware ready and organized for case sealing and I'm realizing I'm somehow missing a cap nut.

Are you sure it's not the regular nut you are missing? I looked for 1/2 hr before realizing this lol.
My engine guy did not use lock tight. |
Quote:
No. I'm missing one cap nut. I'm trying to remember If I damaged it when removing. I ordered a new one today. Kind of annoying ordering a nut that costs $15. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Case is sealed together. I hope it doesn't leak. I felt like I wasn't putting enough 3 bond on but I kept remembering that everyone says a thin coat. Wasn't difficult except for the time limit factor. My heart was racing and i was sweating.

Great thread, I will be right behind you, maybe another month or so.
best of luck |
Good progress today. Finished Section 3 in Wayne's book!
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...676d80e924.jpg http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...2d269425e4.jpg On to section 4 http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...6da1197e19.jpg Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Today I installed the rings on all the new JE pistons. JE recommends the ring gaps in the 10 and 2 position where as Wayne's book recommends 9 and 3. JE says not to orient in line with the wrist pin. So I think I'm going to to follow that.

I like to at least keep the oil ring gap towards the cylinder top, not sure if it really helps over full engine cases with oil from getting into the cylinder when sitting but what the hell.

Yes. Both Wayne's book and JE recommendations agree on that one. So that's what I'm doing too. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Gaining momentum. Pistons in cylinders. Next deck height check.
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...9e385cbd57.jpg This tool made it easy. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...e27ff3240e.jpg Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Also got heads back from machine shop yesterday. Cams should be back next week.

Looking good!

Thanks.
Tried to do the deck height check but having trouble with the JE piston circlips. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Finally got the circlip in. Not fun. What is it going to be like doing the other side on the motor.
I think I'm good with deck height. Did the check. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...ce908b4e6c.jpg http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...cff5ed4459.jpg Came up with an average of 1.44mm. The one on the higher dome side squished more than the other side. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
I went to do my first circlips last night too..
Even with the stomski circlip tool, these clips are really springy and difficult to get seated in the tool. To me, it seems that without a circlip injection tool, it would be near impossibly to get them in without scratching pistons etc...(speaking as an amateur) |
Quote:
The JE clips are thicker and difficult to install. I've fabricated this tool. I have to hit the back of the socket extension with a hammer to get the clips in their seats. So far it's working pretty well. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...b52f594c27.jpg http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...9c5bc3b12a.jpg Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Still working on the right side p&c install. This side seems to be giving me more trouble. Currently on no.5.
Looking ahead at the next chapter in the book it talks about pre assembling to measure valve to piston clearance. My question is do I really need to do this if I am rebuilding a stock engine. Only changes are the JE pistons and a slightly more aggressive cam. (One step below 964 profile.) thoughts? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Yes you need to measure it.
Your engine is not stock anymore, you've changed the pistons and cams, both will change the clearance values. And even with the same components, it's some kind of quality control for your cam timing, so it doesn't hurt to measure it. |
I finally got the second circlip on cylinder no 5 but it was a bitter sweet victory. In doing so the cylinder moved up a bit and the bottom oil ring slipped out. My compressor is the type that you have the put the piston in on a bench. Any other ideas to compress this without buying another compressor or removing the piston and cylinder?
|
GIANT hose clamp?
fyi, I have actually pulled all mine dow again, since I was not happy with my circlip fitting in my pistons. How did you get your circlips in? |
Quote:
Look above. There's a photo of the tool I made using 3/4" copper pipe and a 14mm socket with an extension. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Yea, those JE circlips are a beeach. I bent one, had to order a replacement.
I had another one that at first seemed to go in, but was not fully seated in the groove. Good thing I noticed. |
Quote:
That worked. Kind of a pain to get the rings all in there. But it worked well once you do. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

So if I'm assembling to measure only. Do I install the cylinder head gaskets or leave them out? My thought is to install them as I should not have to remove the heads if every thing checks out. Am I missing something ? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
P&C's are finally done.
