What was your valve clearance set to on 1 and 4, when the valves were closed?

arbita1 11-12-2016 12:11 PM

When closed they are at 0.

I think you mean valves adjusted at .004", not what the dial indicator was set at?

From what I see in the videos you are looking good.

Are you using the stock tensioners when you did this check? And made sure the chains were tight?

Oh yea. .004 was the clearance.

I have the mechanical tensioners from smart racing or one of those companies. You can see them below. Chains are tight.

Cam timing is done. Hydraulic tensioners are in. Started installing the exhaust rockers for cylinders 1 & 4 so I can do the piston to valve clearance check one more time.

GREAT BUILD,

Just some 2 cents from me, great build though, dont shoot me for the advice.

Your cam olines, your left one looks like its the old one? These are cheap insurance to replace, I would.

And why not set them so the rubber bit is straight, reduces stress on the ferrale (connection between rubber and metal pipe). If you blew a cam o line on the left side (due to over stress of the ferrule where the rubber clamps to the metal), it would be a while before you noticed it with the oil pressure light coming on, due to the amount of oil in the system, and the oil pressure gauge sender being on the right (which could at least give some warning for the right side), by that point your left cam train would be trashed :

You will need to loosen of a the whole line, but after that its fairly easy to put them straight and reduce stress on the connection.

Maybe im just fussy! but i always do it. This is an old engine where I took a pic to show some one else a few years ago :

Hi Matt,

Great work you are doing on the rebuild. I have a 3.0 I am rebuilding myself.

If you don't mind me asking, how much did it cost to have the heads rebuilt? Did you need to replace your valves?

Thanks!
Jeff

Rebuild complete. Can't believe I finished. Now to reconnect transmission. Replace cv joints. I'm also still waiting on my fuel injectors to come back from cleaning.

I always found it easier, to put the cvs back in , after the engine and tranny were installed...

I hear you. They can get in the way during engine install. But access to the outside cv is so much easier without the engine in.

arbita1 01-25-2017 05:44 PM

Transmission reconnected.

Just waiting on a few fuel injectors and this thing is ready to be reinstalled.

Startup this weekend?

Hope it goes well.

Turning the key on any overhaul is always a big "pucker" moment....

No. I still have to connect all the stuff underneath. Cv joints, etc. Plus too much snow here to do the initial drives. Probably not going to start for a few more weeks.

Yes. I am very very nervous about the first start. My biggest worry is oil leaking out. [emoji31]

DRACO A5OG 02-11-2017 11:56 AM

Don't sweat it OP, just do the proper pre-break in procedures to insure all is moving freely then go for it.

Break a leg brother!

arbita1 02-18-2017 12:31 PM

Finally finished the remaining misc stuff. Put the tires on and took it off the jack stands.

I put the oil in and did the pressure build up today. The oil light went out within a few seconds on first try. Did it a second time per the book and it went out quickly again. No oil spray or leaks. So I'm taking this as a good sign thus far.

I'm dying to start it but I don't have time to change the oil today after I do. So I have to wait.

It's alive!!

I'm trying to attach a video but it's not working.

It took a bit of convincing to start up. But it finally did. I ran the 20 minute break in. No leaks. It smoked like crazy for about 3 or 4 minutes and then it stopped smoking which I took as a good sign. Changed the oil after 20 mins. I really didn't see all the metallic flakes that the booked talked about. I set the idle and timing.

Did two of the four initial drives. 5 mile and 10 mile. Seems to be good so far. I think I need to check my co setting. The idle does not really want to come down. I was hoping to feel a quicker engine since I fixed a few cis and distributor issues. And also changed to the dc15 cam. As well as a slight bump in compression. But it feels basically the same as I remember it. Maybe after I check co setting I'll get better power. I didn't see leaks after the drives but the ssi's were smoking. I think it may be the residual oil on them as my engine had a lot of leaks and they were covered in oil. I tried to clean them off prior to reinstall but maybe I didn't get it all. Not sure what else it could be.

Right now I'm just really happy to be driving my car after a year of rebuilding. I still can't believe I've done this myself. It's a great feeling.

Trackrash 02-20-2017 12:19 PM

My first impression when driving with my new motor was similar to yours. My new motor sounded the same as my old one. During normal driving, it even felt the same. I have spent the last two weeks fiddling with the carbs and timing. It still is eerily the same as my old motor UNTIL I get past 2/3rds throttle, then all hell brakes loose!

Do get it fine tuned, then you will probably be pleased.

Hey this is great news. Very well done. I have been following your progress over the last few months and I hope to get mine all back together in the next few weeks. Glad that the 20 minute break in went well. I have to say that's the part that I am dreading most.
Looking forward to hearing more about it.

Thank you. Good luck on your rebuild. The start of the engine is pretty nerve racking. However I did find that having to crank the starter to build oil pressure gives some piece of mind that it's going to be ok.

I did some more break in driving today. Put another 25 miles on. Need to do another 45 miles before I change the oil again. After coming home I adjusted the timing again. And set the CO. It was pretty lean. Went out for another test drive...

Never mind what i said before about feeling the same. This is a totally new car. Power is definitely improved. Acceleration is great in all rpm ranges. It's amazing.

I still have some high idle issues I need to address. But i will finish the initial break in drives before I dive into that.

Finished the last of my initial drives. Car feels great. Love the power on the new cams. Feel like I have much more power and acceleration than before. Dumped the oil after the drive and will refill with Kendal gt-1 competition for the next 500 miles. No smoke or leaks as of yet. So I am happy. Still can't believe I rebuilt this thing myself.
