1980 Porsche SC Engine Value?
Hello,
I have a 1980 SC engine and transmission which I want to get rid of. I am asking for opinions as to what is a reasonable dollar amount to ask for it. I want to sell it locally but I don’t want to give it away only later to find out I left money on the table. Your evaluation based on the pictures is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your help!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

It's great to have pics but the history is the real key. How long have you had motor? Miles on motor? Ever been rebuilt? Any compression or leak down numbers? How much oil did it burn? Any broken head studs? Also history of transmission? How does it shift? Synchro issues? Ever been rebuilt ? Miles on it? Until more information is given, you pretty much have to go on core values.

Looks like a junk yard motor/ tranny.
They cut the oil line and torched the CV shafts?

If you don't have a history, you'll probably get more out of the parts than selling it as a whole unit. So guys, what's a core 80 3.0L worth without CIS? A core 915-07?

Wild guess...
$1500 for the motor, $1500 for the trans... $2000 for both... There have been an aweful lot of pieces cut off that motor... |

Seriously! But why?
The parts that were hastily cut could have been so easily removed. Stolen?

Big gamble. $1000 is about what I would risk on a boat anchor/coffee table.

Location and relative seller information......
Please add your location so people would have an idea how much it would take to ship them or where to pick them up. I am interested but would be reluctant to send you the payment because of too many unknown information about the seller. Include your phone number or email for better communication. Good luck.

What's a core worth? Even then I see duct tape on holes. Probably water inside as I'd guess the monkey's that did this didn't cover the holes. My guess is the OP did just before he pressure washed it for the photo.

Yeah, I hate to be that guy.... but 1 post, no location and an engine that certainly has the earmarkings of one removed rather quickly.
The only way this would go down is in person. This is likely one of those scams in the making to take money from hardworking Porsche lovers in the hopes of sourcing a cheap six and transaxle for their project. The OP did not even list the engine number - probably still glowing red.

Hold on, hold on. Everyone calm down. This is not a scam and I am not trying to sell the engine through this forum. I would not want to take the chance and send the engine to someone only for them to find out it has no merit for use.
The engine is located in Canada. It was sitting in the corner of a facility I use to store some of my vehicles in. After 5 years of seeing it, the gentleman who owned the storage facility said he was going to get rid of it so I bought it from him. That was in 1997. If you search “911 SC Engine (1980?) – Worth??” on 6speedonline.com you will see that I posted the same question in 2008. I just have not had the time to try and move it. I engine came from a 1980 red Targa SC which was involved in an accident and written off. There however was some sort of problem with the insurance and the owner hastily took the engine out as you can see. For what reason I do not know but that is the history that was told to me. I am just trying to establish a reasonable value. If the consensus is core value for both the engine and transmission, then what would that be? What I don’t want to happen is to sell it to someone locally for $200 who then flips it on e-bay the next week for $2,000. Your guidance on this issue is still appreciated. Thank you. |

It's a gamble with there being so many unknowns about the internals. Shoot me a PM if you're serious about moving it with your asking price as I'd be interested. Somewhere around 1500-2k is probably fair though.

I think the $1000 estimate for the engine is low. I would value it based on parts:
Fan, housing, alt $500 starter $50, Engine sheet metal $50 Oil cooler $200 Heat exchangers $200 Fiberglass shroud $100 Case if good $800 Crank if good $800 Rods $125 Heads $100 each Pistons and Cylinders $400 Timing housings and covers $100 Cams if good $200 Cam towers $100 each Rockers $100 distributor $100 Valve covers $50 Misc fuel injection $100 Tranny $800 as core $2500 If good. Good luck, john Last edited by targa72e; 04-23-2016 at 07:52 AM.. |

but then he has to tear it down and go through the trouble of marketing it, selling it and shiping it. so i think 2 k might be reasonable.
where about in Canada are you located. have you contacted Randy at Whaletail to see what its worth ? Also keeping mind as mentioned this engine could be junk inside and buyer as pointed out is taking a huge risk. I had some other thoughts about this. Rather than sell it as an engine. Seller could always remove fan, runners and shroud and sell it as a complete long block core. Then make a few bucks on the other items. I think you would have to sink a fair. It of money into it, but a rebuilt 3.0 long block when done would be fairly desirable for those who want to redo an engine but don't have the confidence to crack the long block open. Or don't want to pay a mechanic to.

Any parts on this will need to be refurbished in some way as it's been out in the weather for many years.
I'd run the VIN to see if it's stolen before buying it.
