Cam Timing Question
Why is there a special tool for tensioning the timing chains when setting timing? Why not just use the tensioner itself? It seems to me that with the special tools (or Vise Grips) there could be a real danger of over tensioning the chains and causing some serious problems down the road.

Most cams have a window of settings. I tend to set high to account for thermal expansion while running. I just install tensioner, lift the idler so the tensioner compensates and set the cam. Never a problem.

That was my thought as well. If one has the tensioners on hand why use a special tool? I see no point in tensioning the system more than the tension it's designed to run under all the time.

I think the issue may be the fact that the tensioner can compress some if there is tension placed on the chain. I use a small C-clamp just to make sure the chain stays tight.

I think the tensioner on one side gets in the way of doing the cam bolt?

Bolt style cams work with the tensioners in place. The old style cams with the big nut need the tool on the left side.
