3.0 Case prep for long hood installation
We just finished colorizing an aluminum case (3.0) for installation in a long hood car. The purpose is to replicate a magnesium case. It is purely aesthetic but with these cool old projects, aesthetics count.
Any thoughts? ![]() ![]() ![]()

Neato.. I assume its not paint but some kind of chemical process? Etching cleaner and a tumble? Very cool. Good backdrop for loads of cad plated hardware.

COOL...and looks good. I made my 3.0 MFI look exactly my 2.4 MFI but the aluminium is the big away giveaway for those with a keen eye.
For those that appreciate the finer details it looks the part. Now if you can mimic the magnesium corrosion ![]() As always, great work and product.

That is very cool. I like it. Did you do updated chain case, valve covers, etc?

Nice touch. Mg metal looks just like Al. As long you gave the Al case the same treatment the Mg cases were given they should be indistinguishable. But a lot of old processes would be frowned on by the EPA today. What was the process?

Very cool Henry.... wish you had that process available when you put my 3.5 together. Maybe I'll need to start another project

It's funny, but the 3,0 case I'm building on looks dull. I was going to try to brighten it up, but, since it's going into my '71 I think I'll just leave well enough alone.

We use a lot of steel-it stainless steel paint at work in the food industry that looks a lot like that case and holds up very well, get the hi temp stuff! Expensive but great stuff

Our process is not paint or a coating of any type.
But I've seen painted engine and transmission cases that looked pretty cool. We wouldn't do it but everyone get to build their hot rod any way they choose.

Here is the painted transmission that I used as a desk accessory for a while.
![]() My concern with painting it and actually putting it in the car was whatever affect it might have on the transmissions ability to shed heat. Harry, your process looks great, and I'll bet it is a better alternative. ![]()

Our process is simply a way to make late aluminum bits look period correct.
With aluminum and magnesium parts (like transmission cases) that just need to look clean, we just bead blast them and clean, clean, clean......... Then seal with Gibbs. ![]()

I spent days on my mag 915 case and could not get it to look nearly as nice as those.
