SC oil pump screen and what is this?

Looks like the screen I have is not correct! What is it from?

EDIT: it may be that my pumps suction arm was installed at an angle?

That is the correct screen to use. I believe they are NLA, although reproductions are.

They were introduced to improve oil pickup and improve oiling to the crank compared to previous sump screens.

Be sure to check that screen closely where it attaches to the flange plate. Over time the screen wire can fatigue and it comes apart.

That dimple in the venturi plate is there to provide clearance for the drain plug. So make sure that your sump cover plate is clocked to orient the drain plug with the dimple.

How are you orienting it? The drain plug should not be on the midline of the case.

That is the later sump screen used in late SC's commonly referred as Venturi sump screen. They help prevent or reduce oil starvation to the oil pump during heavy acceleration or cornering.

Can or should this screen be used with the old style sump plate?

Gordon,

The Venturi sump screen has a screen like the older version. See picture below.

To be more clear. I am rebuilding a '78 SC motor. It had the old style screen.

I just bought a venturi screen.

I am wondering if the original sump plate, with the drain plug should be used with the newer style venturi screen? Or is there an updated sump plate that should be used with the venturi screen?

It looks to me like the old style sump plate will partially block the oil pump's pickup.

or do I need one of these?

Thanks,

Sump plate orientation........

Gordon,

I am away from my cars but I have both the OEM steel sump plate and after market aluminum sump plate covers like shown in your picture. If my memory serves me right, I had the drain hole of the sump plate/s oriented away from the oil pick up tube. Some sump plate covers don't have a drain plug and I prefer to have those with drain plugs for convenience draining oil.

I had my pump worked on.. and it looks like the pump arm/tube was rotated and is now off alignment! Not sure what a solution is, outside of getting a custom screen/plate created?

Any creative ideas on how to rotate or bend that scavenge tube? must have been installed incorrectly, so it's rotated too much!

Apparently the oil pickup tube is a press fit and is sealed with epoxy. Search for "oil pump epoxy" in this forum.

Yes, unfortunately the pump tube is glued in place on the pre-3.2 Carrera pumps. The later pumps have a flange on the tube and it screws onto the pump housing. So there's no way to install it improperly.

Only thing you can do is split the case and take the pump out. Sorry.

Try enlarging the mounting holes in the screen until the oil strainer slides on.
Cheers

Doesn't help you now but I had to repair a pump pickup tube once but had the case to check fitment before it was bonded back in place.

Got it!

thanks for all the tips and support guys! I was able to rotate the pickup tube with a fitted socket and long extension.

was checking to see if it could be slightly bent, but it was able to be slowly rotated.

the epoxy still looks solid and isn't cracked.

very happy about this!
