An open and shut CASE

Not a lot of words needed. Two guys, buttoned up in about 50 minutes. Glad I didn't try this first one by myself, having the extra hands was good. Dow 55 on o-rings: To quote Henry Schmidt- "4 sealants equals no leaks": Voila:

I'm looking at my old valves and springs. I ended up getting all new exhaust valves, Aasco racing springs and Ti retainers. I was wondering if the Ti was overkill on the retainers, but when holding one of the old retainers, I'm amazed at how much "heft" they have! Plus, my heads were lightened by having another hole machined in them:

Outstanding idea! My only critique, I think a good single malt would better enhance that cigar.

Some more pics, clean cam towers and the sealing ridge/groove set up in the cylinders and heads.

Ed!! Great work! I'm hoping to get there this month myself! Just one small detail I think you may have missed... I believe there is supposed to be a ground strap/wire attached along the top ridge of the case. I could be wrong, though based on your engine... just that there is one on my sc and I'm using it as reference. I'm sure its no big deal putting it on once everything is nice and dry. Best regards, Michael

Ed, nice! Very very well done. Michael's right, you might want to put the ground strap on, and if your engine had a lifting lug, put that on too (ahead of the breather.) Looking good!

I may have a ground strap there, can't remember. I'll look at my pics. I'm going to get to the breather, oil pistons and springs, t-stat, ramps, etc next I'll look at it then.

Thanks guys! It does feel good, and the case being together now gives me a solid foundation to build on as my goofy travel/work schedule allows. One thing my travel did allow, was for me to go by Supertec earlier today to pick up some parts in person from Henry. What an awesome shop and in a beautiful location!

You are making me jealous. Nice job. I hope to do the same once enough funds are saved for the machine work. How did you clean your pistons?

Ed, I notice you are using DC 55 instead of 111 on the seals. From reading the product sheet that actually looks like a more suitable lubricant than 111. Can you explain how you chose this? Did it swell the seals at all?

Or, I could come clean and tell you that Henry recommended it to me. It what he's now recommending for this task. He stocks it, along with all of the other recommended case sealants. It's hard to say if I saw any swelling, as I applied the stuff to the o-rings, and didn't disturb them prior to putting the thru bolts in.
