'66 911 Engine build for Originality

I have a couple of options. The COA states #903337 as my numbers matching engine, which I do not have. Geneva Foreign has #903340 Engine for Sale. What value is there in having an Engine 3 digits off, when considering the over all value of the vehicle? It is still not numbers matching.......even though it is close.

The other option is taking an aluminum case with c/b crank and building it. Just a random Aluminum case.....(Webers, etc...). I am looking at the set of heads and p&c set that phoffren has for sale on the early911sregistry. Anyone do any business with phoffren? Just want it to drive like a '66 911. Should I go with new P&C's, or can the early ones be redone if in tolerance?

It is a nice to have a matching case type but your for sale ad will still state "almost, but not matching numbers". There are all kinds of breakdowns as to the affect on value with close, not close, matching numbered, unnumbered, factory replacement and other combinations of engines.

Depends on what you want to do with it.

If you want to show it at PCA restoration Concours, which is your only option for top-level competition in PCA because the fact that it's missing its original engine means you can never enter Preservation group, then having a number three digits off doesn't matter, because we don't check the number (but we do check the engine type, in your case, 901/01 or 901/05.)

If you want to show it elsewhere, and they care about originality, then you're out of luck.

If you want to restore it and flip it, the types of buyers that invest in restored cars will both a) insist on a perfectly matching engine; and b) will use that as a lever on valuation.

If your restoration is otherwise a 300 point job, I would say having a non-matching but very close engine wouldn't matter much. . . but if you fall short elsewhere, it matters more, make sense? If it's the ONLY thing wrong that's not terrible, but if it's one of MANY things wrong, that's worse.

Take a look at this thread: Suggestions for warmed over 2.0 901/05?

That should tell you everything you ever wanted to know about concours 1966 911 engines. . .

Sounds like I'll just have to sell my '66 911 Coupe project for scrap metal, since it's not originally perfect.

Sarcasm is an interesting communication tool on the internet.
It's hard to tell whether it's intended to be humor or register contempt.

That said, a nicely restored car has value. Build it to suit your needs and enjoy it.
Don't worry too much about what others say about your project.

A friend recently sold a non matching numbers early S for an incredible amount of money (world record kind of money) for a nice car but not world class and this particular car had a period correct but not matching engine.

It was intended to be humor....more like sarcasm, since deep down, I wish I had my numbers matching engine. Don't mean to offend anyone. .....I appreciate everyone's input here on this Forum. I think this is a great communication tool. Yesterday I saw 304065 had responded on the Early, to someone needing help with the wiring of the Gauges on a SWB.... Fantastic Tread!!! I printed it off to check my wiring on my newly restored VDO's.. I will rebuild the Engine I have, and pray that American Pickers finds my Engine and does the "Right Thing"....
