Is it typical for people to take shortcuts with cams?
I am considering swapping in higher performing cams (964 cams into 930 3.3L).
One thing holding me back is I had been assuming that to do this, I would have to at minimum reface or replace all the cam followers/rockers, related bushings/bearings, and seals - and maybe check chains and ramps, etc. while in there. I have been told by others that "most" or "many" just install the cam, as long as cam follower facings are in good shape, and not to worry about all the other work in this case. Anyone have advice to offer based upon actual experience of theirs or others they have been involved with? I am not generally one to cut corners, but wanted to avoid this turning into a top end rebuild when all I want to do is swap cams.

The rocker arms MUST be reconditioned anytime new cams are installed, otherwise you risk damaging all the lobes.

Gotta agree with Steve here-risky business. And unless you're getting the 964 cams
for a smoking deal they probably aren't the best choice in upgrades. You may want to research that some. Considering you have programmable management you have a pretty free hand here.
