Which cylinder to mate with CP pistons
Guys
Building 86mm 2.45 for my 2.2 decided to go with CP pistons but which cylinder to mate with this. Can I use Mahle and have machined to fit and then Nikasiled ? Thanks for insights Frank

Talk to LN Engineering. I'm pretty sure they can fix you up with a set of Nickies.

You may also look into getting the pistons coated at Calico: ceramic on the tops and dry film lube on the skirts. Lots of options... I think that added $200 to my P/C set. They are favored by a frequent contributor here.

You don't say what cylinders you have now and what CR you are going to have. Some of the 2,2 cylinders will work well when bored. They also can be nikasil coated. Your horsepower goal will also make a difference in your choice.

My present cylinders are the original cast iron. It's around $1,000 to have these machined and Nikasil coated to match the pistons. My concern is the 2618 aluminum pistons and the cast iron cylinders related to expansion of different materials .
LN nickies are around $3500 for cylinders to match the pistons. My goal HP is around 185-190 . I like tharbert's comments on the ceramic tops and dry film at skirts. This was also presented in Wayne's book. At this point I am leaning to the Nickies route it's ONLY ? $2500 more ( seems a lot ) The goal for this engine is for a high level of street performance maybe some autocross so for me low end torque and hard pulling to not more than 6k is desired.

If you want low end and mid range torque you should really consider a 2,4 or 2,7 crank and rod set.
I am just retiring a 2,5 (66 stroke 90 bore) with E cams. It is a sweet running motor. That is above 4K rpm. Very frustrating coming out of slow turns at an AX. BTW, I was running T cams and they were no better at the bottom end. IMO, you need the 70mm stroke crank for the kind of performance you want. Mortgage the ranch and make it a 2,7 (or better yet a 2,8) you will never regret it.

Well I have considered 70mm .... and thought the Solex cams and proper curved distributor and right jetting in the 40 Italian Webers would get the low end desired.
Will keep open mind and look forward to more discussion. Thanks Frank

I would agree here: you need a long stroke crank. Back when I was doing such things the best two auto x engines I had were RS piston 40 IDA/E cam and JE 9.5/1 40 IDA S cam varieties. The grunt in slow corners as posters have noted but also the grunt in 2nd gear -- as shifting costs time. Area under the curve is more important than anything else. Long stroke and more displacement are the answers. My 2c. Maybe worth less!

Thanks for input...did decide to go for 70.4 crank also 87.5mm cylinders "Nickies" and CP pistons.
Found nice set of Italian 40 webers . Now thinking about distributor .....what's everyone opinion?

I never had any trouble with my stock and recurved original Bosch points distributor.
I'm not sure what other options there are for the 2,2s. Do you have the distributor and CD box for the 2,2? Good decision on the crank and cylinders. You will have a strong running dependable motor.

I will need to check my box of engine related parts that came with the car for CD box and distributor.
Most parts unusable, so probably will be chasing those items as well. Thanks Frank
