How in blazes is this exhaust nut supposed to come off?
My 79 SC is on the lift and I'm removing all the bits and pieces around the engine, trying to strip as much as possible before dropping the motor and rebuilding it.
All the Allen and hex bolts holding the SSIs to the head came off without major fuss, but one hex nut has me stumped. It is the outside nut on the middle head on the passenger side (see pic). I've tried every tool under the sun but nothing comes close to even engaging the nut. Is there some weird shaped Porsche tool needed to get that bastardly nut off? Wayne's books don't talk about it and a search of the forum didn't really get any hits. Help..... ![]()

I guess whoever installed the SSIs for the previous owner failed to leave the wrench with the car....
That is one odd looking wrench. I'll hit home depot and buy an offset box wrench and take it from there, maybe use the MAP torch to bend it and replicate that SSI wrench...Thanks much foe the quick reply!

I have stock heat exchangers but I managed to get the tricky nuts off with this style of wrench:

Went to Sears and bought a set of deep offset box wrenches but they wouldn't do the job (the angle is just too severe with the SSIs, but should do for stock exchangers). Then a light bulb went off and after sacrificing a 12mm socket, some bar stock and a few feet of welding wire...voila, the perfect tool for that cursed nut. I didn't even have to heat treat the bar stock to keep it from bending, the nut was pretty loose from multiple heat cycles with a propane torch and subsequent liberal application of penetrating oil, it came right off... ![]()
