Your rendering work is amazing. I particularly like the exploded rocker arm picture- beauty in simplicity.

Truly magnificent art

All i can say is wow, while your canvas and brush are a computer screen and micrometers you truly are an artist

Glen,

I get goose bumps looking at your computer generated images. You are a genius in my book. Please continue making more of your master pieces. Thanks for sharing.

In a previous life I used UG, later named NX. Your modeling is beyond impressive. As mentioned people probably would buy posters/etc.

Fantastic work - thanks for sharing!

thanks guys! I've started trying out some animation within the rendering software I use. Just teaching myself so it's all very basic, but thought you guys might enjoy it.

What rendering package do you use? vray, keyshot?

Again, beautiful work! At first I thought I was looking at my car (post #98) but my daughter tells me the colour is not slate grey, but some sort of green (I'm colour-blind).! What colour is it?

After seeing your renderings, I realized that the oil-cooler duct was originally grey. On mine, it's black with a lot of scratches, showing the grey underneath, and it looked terrible. I stripped it and polished it and it looks great!

My car is very close to this color - VW Sea Blue

Gorgeous! Looking at it, I felt something was wrong and thought - 'OMG, he's made a mistake with the exhaust!'. I then remembered this engine goes into a 914, not a 911!

Optimusglen 03-31-2018 11:49 AM

Haha, yeah. I modeled the 914 exhaust first because I had a real set to build from. I do plan on doing a 911 orientation but for that I'll need to work off photos I find online.

Optimusglen 04-05-2018 10:19 AM

So it's looking like the case for my real 911/07 needs to be sent to Ollies, bummer but I suppose it was to be expected.

I've made a few additions to the 3D model, still so many details I need to tackle, and I haven't even started the throttle linkages.

If anyone is interested in an art print, I do have a few views up at society6.com/autoillustrated

Eric at Pelican Parts 04-05-2018 05:18 PM

Fantastic!! You never disappoint with these updates!

The animation with the rendering software is really cool. Do you have plans to animate the motor so it runs?

Can I ask how big the file is now in data and what kind of hardware are you running to be able make such a monster assembly?

My laptop fully spec'd from HP can barely run fixtures I've put together and sometimes takes hours to convert files from customers.

I have a bit of a hotrod laptop. What video card are you running and how much RAM?

After I create the models I export as step files. A step file is a universal true geometry format that can generally be opened by any model software, but it's a "dumb" model in that if I want to change a hole size from 10mm to 11mm for instance, I can't just click on that feature and change the value from 10 to 11 like I could in the native file. The bright side is that the step file is a bit more compressed than the native file, the engine/trans assembly is about 200mb.

When I import the step file into my rendering software, the import process converts the smooth round surfaces into triangles, this is called tesselation. I choose how much tesselation on import, the highest value of 1 breaks the surfaces into billions of triangles and thus extremely large files. For my latest image that one was brought in with a tesselation value of 0.15 and contains 30,500,000ish triangles with a file size of about 650mb which is manageable. Here's a shot of a valve cover showing the individual triangles.

http://c1.staticflickr.com/1/887/408...6644d024_b.jpg

The software does this because it needs to calculate exactly how much light is reflecting where to make true photo-realistic images. Higher tessellation values make for more accurate reflections because it's breaking the surfaces up into smaller facets and calculating each and every one for color and light.

I have some files that are multiple gb, but much of that is because I brought everything in with a much higher tessellation value earlier on in my history.

And applying labels and decals brings the file size up a lot too. This Martini 914 model with my engine model installed is 5.5 gigs. If I brought this up and updated the tessellation value I could likely bring this down quite a bit though.

Hi --any chance on purchasing high quality prints on some of your pictures? Thanks Chris

+1 I’d buy a few as well.

I have to say the heat effect on the diffuser is brilliant!

Tippy 06-25-2018 08:11 AM

Ok, you've now officially became my hero.

That oil cooler looks crazy time consuming to reproduce.

Dang.... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/pray.gif

Optimusglen 06-25-2018 01:24 PM

Thanks gents! I'm debating what I want to do about the transmission. I found the model for this one online and originally used it as a placeholder. It's not really a model I can revise, as it is one imported "blob" without editable features. But it's also not quite up to the standards that everything else is at.... unfortunately for me to get a trans model to that point it would take starting from scratch.

Certainly something I *could* do, but the drive to do it isn't the same as when I was creating the engine.

That's one of the reasons I have been holding off on creating too many art prints. It's just weird to see the engine so well done and the trans just kinda blah.

That said, there are a few prints available on my page at www.society6.com/autoillustrated for those that want to give it a look.

As always, thank you for the support! The real build is stalled out while I save funds to get the casework done.

Man, I WISH my freshly rebuild motor, looked as neat as this rendering!

Just built a new computer for rendering, I thought I would expand a bit on my previous response to this. the new build renders an image in 1/3 the time that the old computer did it.

-processor is the 2nd gen Ryzen 7 2700 (8 core)
-32gb of RAM, though 16 would have probably been fine
-GIGABYTE Radeon RX 550 2gb graphics card
-boots Windows 10 from a Samsung SSD, storage is a 1T WD mechanical hard drive

(for reference, the old setup was running an Intel Core i7-4810, 16G of RAM, not even sure what GPU)

Keyshot is very processor dependent, so the more cores the better. Other software may rely more on a graphics card. And any system benefits from a lot of RAM.

My advice is to research what your software likes and build to that. Building your own PC is not only fun and extremely rewarding, but it's also far cheaper than buying a spec'd out box from a retailer. Also, it's really very easy.

Here's the new rig

I've been meaning to get back to this model and render out some posters, but I've been swamped.

Apologies for not being engine related, but wanted to show another little project I'm working on.

I figured it was about time I get a new transmission modeled. As stated previously, the one shown before was just a place holder. It was a model I found online that was fairly accurate. This new one was scratch built, but there aren't any interior details. This is a 901 gearbox that would have been in 911's up to early 1969.

This one was made using almost entirely reference photos, so for anyone reading along and wanting a 3D model to help you with some project, this isn't it. Some aspects might be very close, others are literally just "eye-balled". Good for making pretty pictures but that's about it.

Glen, the sticker on the coil BRACKET did not appear until the SC. The sticker on the COIL is OK.

I am really enjoying this thread, thanks for sharing this amazing work with us.

Optimusglen 01-31-2019 07:04 AM

Hey all, it's been awhile! One of my recent projects tasked me with hashing out the engine model a bit more to include the engine tins and mounts. You'll notice that the mount assembly isn't there yet, and I'm still missing some case hardware, but I thought you guys might enjoy these shots nonetheless.

The material for the tins was supposed to be the thin composite material, but the weave isn't showing up as well as I would like, so it'll need some more work.

Holy crap!!! Not sure how I missed this, but outstanding work!!

Somehow I ended up in a roundabout way stumbling across your Society6 account after seeing the rendering work you did for 000 Magazine. Wonderful stuff, you have a great eye!

Another update for you all. It's been SO LONG.

I finally wrapped up the exterior of the case halves facing the flywheel. For the longest time one was done and the other was just a flat surface. Also shown here some misc hardware and the rear main seal.
