2nd oil cooler

I know I've seen this before but now I can't find it. 3.0l twin plug in 72 911. I have the oil cooler in the right front fender but air flow is a problem. I thought when I moved to Oregon oil temp wouldn't be a problem but on a 70 deg day I still have oil temps of 230 on a 20 minute session DE.

So should I add a second oil cooler in the left fender or go for the center mounted cooler?

I have a center mount in a '73 with a 3 liter twin plug. Oil temp never goes over 200 deg F.

Some guys take the headlight out on the side of the oil cooler (passenger side I believe?) and cut a hole in the back of the headlight bucket to allow some direct air flow to the cooler. Of course, a center mount cooler is the best option for cooling ...

We've added a second cooler to the left front fender which minimizes the modifications to the chassis of the car. Preserving these old cars is important to so many owners.

We even built a retro-fit cooler for 914/6 that allows for a remote cooler without modifying anything but the engine lid.

911 Oil cooling

Kent,

If you have space to add an electric fan that would be my first suggestion - - that is of course if you have the Carrera fender cooler and not the trombone.

The other option is to get more outside air flow to the existing oil cooler. this usually means ducting panels and maybe a new hole somewhere - - like was suggested for the headlight opening.
If you only have the cooling problem at the track then cutting the back of the headlight bucket is a good option, along with some ducting panels to make sure the air flow is THRU the cooler.

We went thru this with my son's race car when we swapped out the 3.2 for a 3.8 (which doesn't have an oil cooler at the engine like the 3.2) - - - we have 3 oil coolers and lots of duct panels and headlight holes - - but then it is a bit warmer here in Phoenix than most places . . .

You might call and talk to Chuck Moreland at Elephant about your particular situation.

Interesting: We had an Aubergine 1972 911T back in 1977 in Kentucky/Virginia - - I am color blind and thought it was Blue - until my wife told me, " You bought a Purple car !! "

Regards,

Hi Kent

Which solution did you opt to go with? How did it work?

Hey Johan
Surprisingly I'm in Chula Vista at the Marina RV park in my Motor Home till the end of the month. Had lunch with Mike Gagan last week.

Well first I cut out the battery box. Moved battery into the smugglers box. I then fabbed in some aluminum to cover the hole and riveted it in place. Then I took that insulation stuff you spray into corners in your house and sprayed it around the sides of the cooler so the air has to go thru it.

So far the only time I've had a issue is at Oregon Raceway Park in eastern Oregon. Short tight and no long straight only 4th gear on the short straight. My red line is 7200 and if I stay out of 2nd gear my oil temp stays around 220.
