Stomski circlip tool
I have seen the light! Based on the advice of the knowledgeable people on this forum, I ordered the tool and received it in two days - super service.
I can say for the likes of JE and Carrillo heavy wire circlips, it is flat out the best tool money you will ever spend. What was once a job high in frustration and possible personal injury turns into: click, click done. Thanks to Steven Stomski for making such a fine tool available.

We use that tool on every aircooled motor we build. No more screwdriver through the palm or you hand... search and you will see I speak from experience....

Stomski tools are great and as has been said, service is immediate. The cam sprocket holder/bolt tool is wonderful. Pricey and perhaps “gilding the lily” as opposed to the factory tool but it makes holding cam timing while tightening the bolt, et al, much easier. Eliminates the need for that third hand.

If you're in a pinch and can't wait for the tool then copper tubing and a 5/8" socket from home Depot, Lowe's or any neighborhood hardware store like ace works the same.

I tried the 3/4 copper pipe swagged to thin the wall out and so it fit the 23 mm opening of the piston. With the heavy wire of the JE and Carrillo clips, I found that using the pipe permanently deformed the circlip. The Stomski tool has a very thin wall thickness that does not deform the circlip at all - I verified that.

Sounds like the copper wasn't thinned enough. Worked great for me.

For my SC build I used EMT tubing. Thin walled tubing, worked great with a machined down bolt as a guide.

I used the Stomski tool for the circlip installation - done in about 20 mins - the tool works as advertised! Can't imagine doing that task without it.

Yes, the Stomski is one fine tool but in what ways is it better than the homemade contraptions with a tube and an old socket ?

Just experienced the circlip installation onto JE pistons. That circlip is one stout beast.
I can't imagine success without the Stomski tool. "Must Have" tool for any Porsche toolbox. |

My Stomski knock-offs. I think they cost me about $20, plus the 10k or so in lathe, welders, etc etc. But hey, I saved money by making them myself.

Only if I want to work for close to nothing. Maybe the chain tensioners, they are very simple but do the job and easy to make. But then again unless you are doing this a lot just use a clamp..

There's a lot of ways to 'skin a cat', but if you're a tool guy; it's hard to beat Stomski's stuff. Beautiful & fun to use.
