Vintage 2.7 L rebuild cost compared to a modern water cooled and 911 engine
Good morning gentlemen I've been staring at Craigslist this morning prompted this question. With your help I think I have a pretty good idea of what it's gonna cost to rebuild my 2.7 L, but I'm curious as to that cost/effort compare to a more recent water cooled 911 engine rebuild.
Car and driving experience are totally different animals of course, but there are some interesting cars available for pretty cheap that have me pondering... Thanks!

I rebuild 996 engines (M96/97), basic bare bones using rebuild factory shortblock, no headwork other than pressure test and surface or anything else like fly, clutch, AOS etc $15-17K. This is a basically a slap together get'er running deal.
Full rebuild price with LN goodies, which is just a little bit better than stock HP, is easily the cost of a very well optioned performance aircooled with 50+% increase in HP. Even then the aircooled is likely still cheaper. Also it takes about $5K in tools to rebuild a 996 engine. The aircooled engine 2.0 thru 3.6 are all about the same rebuild cost. You'd have to sub out the machining, but many have home built their engines.

The aluminum cases require virtually no machine work vs magnesium. I'd think mag cased engines cost much more.

The OP is active on 914world so I figured he's talking about an aircooled engine for a 914 six conversion, so I was factoring in the conversion fly/clutch he would need on a 3.0 and up. ![]()

Yes and no, maybe in SoCal but prices are pretty steady ROW.
Also depends on the model and condition, for example the C4S is still fairly sought after.

The borescope insist on pictures of each cylinder, some shops have been known to cheat on this inspection. It will cost $4-600 but well worth it, way cheaper than a new engine. The dual row IMS bearing is less problematic, but I would factor the price for it when you need to replace the flywheel/clutch. Parts prices are about 4 time the cost of 914 parts prices. 996's also go through tires a lot faster, of course how fast depends on how you drive it. You don't want this:
