I don't know much about Palm Desert but Palm Springs area has lots of hiking. I am sure there is local hiking in the Palm Desert area. If the ladies rent a car it would help a lot to get around. You don't have to leave the city for hiking. Just ask at an info center or hotel.
Of course there is golfing everywhere. There is the College of the Desert in Palm Springs which has a great market. I think it happens on a Sunday. Restaurants are great and there is a great variety of kinds of restaurants.
If hiking or driving anywhere make sure to carry lots of water. The temperatures are getting warmer now. A gps or cell phone for navigation would help while driving. Driving around the Palm Springs area is pretty civilized. Make sure she takes her Costco card in case they go wine and grocery shopping. Their Costco's are a real treat. So is Trader Joes.
Cheers, Guy
