Service Intervals - What is with these????
I bought a 2004 330ci demonstrator from the local dealer with 12,000km on the clock.
I asked about service history - and was told the first service is not due until 25,000km! What's with this? I always thought it is important to change oil frequently during the first 10,000 or so km as the engine is breaking in. The BMW service guys insist this is no longer necessary. What's with this?

I'll let you do the conversions but in the States it is 15k miles. Early on, there was a problem with filters lasting that long but that was supposedly corrected several years ago.
The truth is that synthetic oils can go 15k miles but it becomes very important to check the level periodically. I prefer to change synthetic oil at a 6mo/7500mi. If you do have it changed before the service indicator says make sure you don't reset the service indicator because the dealer will not do a fee oil change until the indicator reaches zero. As far as oil changes during the break-in period, BMW obviously doesn't consider this an issue but I wonder how much of their decision was based on their profit margin.

The only reason the dealer says that is it saves them money on new cars thru the govt-->when the dealer says SERVICE they mean SERVICE-->NOT OIL CHANGE-->you should change oil on synthetic cars at 5,000 miles & non-synth at 3,000
