Window not working

Hello all,
I have a 98 E39 (528i) and the passenger side front window does not work. The switch on the driver door does not operate the window nor does the switch in the passenger door. How can I tell if it is the driver switch, passenger switch or motor that is malfunctioning? Thanks for any help.

The switch is likely not the culprit. Window motors can go but on BMW the window regulator is common to fail. The regulator is what the motor is attached to and the window rides on to move up and down.

Can you hear a noise when you press the switch? that might indicated the motor is still functioning.
Be sure to check out our DIY article on E39 Power Window Testing! It may help you with diagnosis!

Matt, thanks for quick reply. There is no noise when I press either switch. Shall I assume it's a bad motor?

No problem Jhypnar! In the article mentioned above it mentions checking the fuses first.
Quote:
In our case of the 1997 E39 the two fuses that power up the power window system are fuses 6 and 29
Unfortunately, they also state that the only way to test the motor is to remove the door panel so it's tough to say for sure but it may be worth checking first.

If you do choose to order a new motor, it looks like we have one from an OE supplier for a reasonable price:
