540i engine blocks

I have heard that some 540/740 engines have bad blocks, causing a rough idle condition, due to low compression caused by worn cylinders. Is this true for the 530 engines as well ??

No. There wasn't a problem with them to the best of my knowledge. Although, problems like that can happen to any block, the 3 oh wasn't a cancer patient.

I'm pretty certain this is a well known problem with both the 3.0 and 4.0 V8 engines early on. The early blocks had Nikasil linings and the sulfur in the U.S. fuel is thought to deteriorate them. BMW switched to Alusil cylinders in ~1997 and since then there has not been a problem. BMW even upped the warranty to 7 years / 100,000 miles, which you know they wouldn't do just to be nice. Make sure any pre-97 530/540/740 you consider has had the block changed to Alusil. Be careful, some of the early Nikasil engines were replaced with other Nikasil engines, so it's not enough to see documentation that the block was changed. I think there's a website for koala motorsports that lists the exact block numbers. You can also find out more about this problem at www.bmwe34.net Good luck.

Is there any truth to the rumor that up unitl a certian mileage, BMW will still replace the motors? I heard of a guy recently having it done here in the South Bay
