It depends on the car. On my 528e, it's fairly easy:

1) Remove steering wheel
2) Remove 2 phillips screws from the top of the gage cluster.
3) Pry out cluster using a small flat blade cluster
4) Detach the wiring harnesses. This is actually the most painful part, since there's a lot of connections, and several of them can be interchanged. I typicially make a little diagram
5) Replace the bulbs
6) Reverse to reinstall

Wait a sec, you have an airbag? You might not want to remove it. Should be removed by the dealer.

Thanks for the replies guys

I prefer to think of it as a "classic"

I wouldn't go to the dealer yet. I've taken the gauges out of my 95 525 twice and it's not too difficult if you take your time. First get access from under the dash by removing the panal above the foot brake. Alos move the steering wheel all the way out. I didn't have to remove the wheel but it took some thought to get it out. You can reach up there also get yourself a good light. It's a tight fit but a little patience will save you a bundle.
