1998 528i fault code #39
HI PEOPLE. I HAVE A '98 528i . LATE LAST WINTER, WHEN I LOST TRACTION, THE YELLOW TRIANGLE IN THE CENTER OF MY DASH STAYED LIT. IT HAS BEEN ON EVER SINCE. SINCE THEN ALSO, MY ASC BUTTON HAS NOT OPERATED. THAT IS, IT DID NOT TURN ON OR OFF. MY LOCAL GARAGE FOUND THE FOLLOWING FAULT CODE....... #39 THROTTLE POTENTION SERVO MOTOR.......
THEY HOWEVER WERE UNFAMILIAR WITH THE CODE, AND 2 WEEKS LATER I STILL DON'T HAVE ANY ANSWERS. I DEFINATELY FEEL THE CAR DOES NOT HAVE THE TRACTION IN THE SNOW/ WET THAT IT DID HAVE, SO FUNCTIONALLY SOMETHING IS WRONG. CAN ANYONE OFFER SOME ASSISTANCE HERE?? I WOULD BE MOST APPRECIATIVE. |

Looked up code 39(decimal) for a 98 528i in the manual for my Bavarian Autosport code reader. (which really reports the codes in hexadecimal) Says Knock Sensor, Cyl 1-3. So I converted the 39 to hexadecimal. No hex 27 listed. Nor is there a symptom for a "THROTTLE POTENTION SERVO MOTOR" listed.
So I looked in the Emissions CD for error code 39(decimal). "Brake light switch". Nope not that one. Tried hex 27. "Idle Speed Control Valve". Nope. So I searched for "throttle". All the "throttle" error codes are between decimal 109 and 174. ??? Dunno. Tried but didn't get anywhere. Only thing I can think of to try is to disconnect the battery, short the cables together for a few minutes, and re-connect. Supposedly this reset parts of the computer(s) back to defaults. After that, to the dealer and a diagnosis run on the BMW DIS? Or have them reset the ASC? Just not enough valid info to work with. LOL!!!!

Was this code in the ASC or in the DME??.....sounds like 2 different faults
Throttle position is usually a DME fault for the throttle body->have seen a few go bad

Cowboy, I think it was ASC , under the ABS, but I could be wrong. I have an elictrical problem pop up which has taken priority. I've lost control of my windows and mirrors. I have posted that in another thread.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR REPLY. Happy Holidays |
