I have a 1998 528i. I was informed by my local BMW dealer that I need my final stage resistor replaced due to the blower staying on for several minutes after turning the car off and removing the key. They said that it will kill my battery. (which it did) I am wondering just how difficult it would be to replace the resistor? I don't normally try to fix things myself, but if the job isn't too complicated maybe I can just purchase the resistor and do the labor myself saving the $200.00 labor charge. What tools are needed? Is the job as straight forward as replacing a fuse in the car? Also, If this is something that a novice can do, is there a website where I can view a diagram showing exactly where this resistor goes?
Thanks! Last edited by Travel_Guy; 06-02-2009 at 03:14 PM.. |

According to the shop manual it should not be to difficult to replace. The resister pack is located by the heater housing behind the glove box. I think you can change it out with basic tools since its a plug type pack. Do a search for the part ( to see what it looks like) and you should be able to ID the part if you look under and or behind the glove box.

It should be easy and I think you will find DIY on the web for the E39. You may need a Torx bit to do it.

I had the blower motor go completely out with my 2000 528iA. It never acted funny just went out. I replaced the FSU after checking the appropriate fuses ( I double as a contortionist ) and it still doesn't work on any setting. I am assuming that the blower motor itself is out and from what I have heard it is not a fun job. I even reached in through the intake and made sure that the "squirrel cages" of the motor are moving and not jammed. Have I ruled everyhing else out? If so, is there any other way to get the thing out? I did it a while ago on an e28 and you could get at it through the fire wall.

I am having a difficult time locating a clear diagram showing me exactly where the final stage resistor is located. Can anyone post a link to the diagram?
Thanks!
