1998 e39 missfire HELP?

Our 523I touring (2.5 motor) has a intermitent miss fire @ low rpm and load,it appears to be dropping a cylinder, theres no problem when the car revs above 1500.
Have replaced crank sensor, plugs and air cleaner and can find no obvious air leaks.
The tail pipe was very sotty before changing plugs,by the way the car has covered 200,000kms to date and generally runs well but burns a little oil.
Oh another question my car has alway been slow to change down to 5th gear,is there a steep down adjustment on the ZF auto box?

Have you run the codes on the car? That would be the first thing I would do.

Have you replaced the Oxygen Sensor? That might be the problem.

As for the Transmission, which one do you have? Here in the states, the auto trannys were GM units, not ZF.

Thanks for the answer, will the oxy sensor come up as a fault after running the codes?
Sorry I checked my owners manual and can't find the ZF auto type our car has,I do know its a Steptronic type, thanks for your time.
