Question Computer flickering

On my E39 540 I am noticing a flickering of the display on the computer..

Today I had to reset the clock & Date. This happened while the car was running.

Does anyone have experience with this??

Please let me know.

Marc,

I don't have a computer...or a 540....but the radio display on my 1999 528I does flicker. It's almost like a loss of power for a moment then it's gone.

I'll ask BMW if this is something known, hoping to get something for free

Marc,

The Radio/Computer display on my 99' 528i wagon sometimes flickers, too. Well, here is my theory: It is a fact, that the display has at least one "photosensor" somewhere to adapt the brightness of the display to the changing daylight (i.e. to max the display illumination in bright sublight, min when it's dark). Hating the idea that is could actually be a defect, I am trying to convice myself that there are situations where a specific light situation might cause the display to be "indecisive" to go darker or brighter, resulting in a flicker here and there - does that make sense?
Admit I never managed to prove my theory. First I would need to find the position of those sensors (I suspect there are more than the one which is clearly visible in the area of the climate control), then I would need to waive around with e.g. black card board pieces to simulate changing light situations......

Cool

Hi Guys,

I was just reading some of these posts. I normally surf the 911 pages but since my day car is a BMW this board got me interested.

Since about 7 years my day-to-day car has been a BMW, had 2 3 series and now am enjoying my second 5 series (unfortunatly a diesel, 525d who by the way kicks serious ass, but with 100000km (65000miles) per your diesel is the only affordable option here in Europe)

All my cars had this flickering display. the car I drive now has the GPRS computer display that doesn't do that but the display at the speed and rpm intecators does.

What it actually indecates is a selftest of the computer, the brightness controll, the led status etc...
It's normal and it's supposed to do so, guess only real car nuts as us realy see it happen and think about it.

I have to say I had my first car in the shop twice before someone told me this.

Good luck,
Bart.
