2001 R1100S - Parked for 15 years...

I just picked up a 2001 R1100S with only 1800 km. It was parked indoors by the original owner untouched for 15 years. Other than a non-functional fuel pump, everything seems okay. I have changed all fluids, including the ABS servo fluid (I have an RT with the same system), replaced the battery, and have a fuel pump and tires arriving today. Is there anything else that I should be checking? Are there any common problems with these bikes?

Does anyone know where I might find the rear signal light holders (part 63132306801)? The bike is in amazingly good condition with the exception of two broken signal lights...

Thanks.

As most of us spent many years walking past our bikes and knocking them off..anything but OE will do, and if it’s clicks...assume either Europe or Canada.

Rubber brake lines rot and can then pop when hard braking. Check them or just replace with Speigler or other braded steel ones.

Mine had a rear turn signal hanging when I bought it. Max BMW has then in stock online. www.maxbmw.com

Wow, 1800km. Put new tires on it, after 15 years the rubber will be hard. As ckcarr said new brake lines, and fuel lines.

Canadian bike - Yes equal to 1100 miles. Installed the new fuel pump and a set of Road 5 tires today. Runs and feels great. The fuel and brake lines look and feel fine. I will replace them either way. Looks like it will be a good addition to the herd...

While the easy option is to ask questions, to say there is a mountain of info on this board is an understatement, and if you want a UK perspective look at Boxertrix.

With the brake lines the important part is what you can not see, the previous owner of my bike told me that about three years ago he was moving the bike in the garage and applied the front brake and the line developed a split, said visually they looked good. I'm not sure what they use for reinforcement in those original lines.

So was there a story why your bike sat for so long?

My brake lines looked good on the outside. However, when I would squeeze the front brake lever I would observe a big bubble swell up. I was sort of fascinated with it...

Then when I ordered and received the Speigler braided lines (which can be ordered in a black retro finish to match the original bike line colors), I squeezed the brake lever with the original line still connected.... And didn't take much to pop and blow brake fluid all over...

I had the issue on my previous S, and it was "only" 15 years old at that time. Luckily, I replaced the brake lines before they pop.

Fuel filter? Purely from an age pov.
That’s a nice find!

And fuel lines for sure.

Also make sure you release the zip ties constrains on the wiring harness, especially near the Neimann.

And check the clutch slave cylinder. Buy a replacement paper seal to replace the old one, even if the cylinder is fine.

For a machine that old, with so few miles, the MoS2 grease on the spline must be gummed. If you have the possibility, disassemble the transmission and clean/regrease all the splines.

Be also prepared for a rear engine seal failure.
I don't want to alarm you, but finding such a bike is not necessarily a budget buy.

And a big +1 on replacing the rubber fuel lines under the fuel tank. Mine were rotted and leaking which I discovered by sensing the evaporative cooling of my right pant leg due to the fine mist of gasoline emanating from the leak - very exciting it was.

Replace the left cylinder’s cam chain tensioner with the updated one, a know issue with the original will cost you an engine.

In the first 10k miles I had replace the fuel pump and in-tank fuel lines, brake hoses, crank sensor, cam chain tensioner, headlamp bulbs and the tire valves rotted out of the rims.

I like to complain that it's the most unreliable motorcycle I have ever owned. But still, I love riding it.

BMW Roundel

Nice find! Have fun with rebuilding it to its former glory. If you got it for a song, that's even better.

I just started to rebuild mine. It is a 2002 R1100S Boxer Cup Prep I bought it from the first owner in 2010. I rode it for a couple of years until I got an 2012 R1200GS Adventure. It has basically sat since. I moved to my new location in 2014 and rode it from the moving truck to the underground garage of my apartment where it sat until I moved into my new home last year. I sold my GSA in 2015 so I have not ridden in a while and want to fix mine up and get back into riding. I have 55k miles on the Boxer Cup Prep.

I took the tupperware off of it earlier this week and removed the battery. It was all swollen and ruined; luckily it was not leaking. Since I had to remove all of the gasoline to move it back in 2014 and it has not had gas in it since, I plan to replace all of the gas tank internals (fuel pump, filter, fuel lines) and all of the external fuel lines before putting it back in service. I will also start to assemble the parts needed to replace the clutch, but I will wait until next winter to do that unless it is absolutely necessary. I have an HID headlight out so I'll need to get a new module for it. I have a broken rear turn signal that needs replaced. I have a new one ready to install. I'll need to get new tires, new brake lines, do a complete brake fluid flush, oil change, rear seals were replaced in 2012 but I'll need to change the fluid again, and I'm sure I'll find more as I tear into it.

I am hoping to be able to ride it this summer, so here's to the project.
