Question Clear Alternatives Tail Light Problem

Have an 03 R1100S with Integral brakes. Installed the Clear Alternatives tail light with the LED bulb. Getting a fault light on the dash. When I reinstall the stock bulb, the fault goes away. Anyone using this product on a bike with Integral brakes? Love the clear look and would like to make it work. Clear Alternatives sent me a replacement LED to try, but no luck. Thanks in advance for any help

EZ-RIDER: Thanks for the reply. Integral braking was not an option on the 2000 model. Did a search on Clear Alternatives and found nothing concerning my problem

The LED light will not work with integral abs. Need to use the stock bulb in red. EZ-Rider: Quit looking for the past post and thanks for your offer to do so.

Bikes with latest ABS monitor the power going to the rear light and if the standard 5w filiment blows it reduces the power to the 21w stop filiment for normal running so you always have a rear light.
LED lights confuse the power monitoring so dont work.

And this is just another reason NOT to have all that fancy 'the bike knows better than the rider does' gimcrackery. I wonder how long until there's a FDR (flight data recorder) on these things just like the 'stealth' one in all the airbags of every OBDII-compliant car......

Just read the R1200GS has no wiring loom, just one "smart" wire and NO fuses... it's all microprocessor controlled.

Cuts down on do-it-yourself projects...

WildWilly - I have a 03 as well and have encountered the same issue. I am going to call Robert Foster and see if he knows anything that we could do or possible refund my money.

ABS Fault W/LED

Greetings,

The LED's do create a fault in the ABS system.

If you purchased an LED from me and have a problem, we can resolve this issue.

Please e-mail me at the e-mail address below.

Just a wild guess, but I bet the system is trying to make sense of the current draw. Try measuring the current through the original bulb and the new set (use a low-value resistor in series, measure the voltage drop across it), and then calculate what will be needed to be added in parallel with the new one (I'm guessing that the new ones, using LEDs, are probably drawing less) to make it emulate the old bulb.

Don't try to measure the resistance of the bulb(s) directly - it varies greatly with temp. in the incandescent, and your meter probably won't push enough voltage and current to make the LEDs conduct.

Just a guess...

Mike
