Angry R1200GS insurance vs R1100S

Im not back yet but I am working on it. I have been kicking around the idea of a new R1200GS so I thought I would get a quote or two on insurance.

My bottom line was around $625 a year for the R1200GS and $390 for a 04 R1100S. This quote was from Daryland. I got similar quotes from Progressive.

The extra 100CCs really drive the cost up.

Ya know, Insurance is such a rip off. I mean it's good to have when you need it but the rate basing is stupid. How does that extra 100 cc make a difference in anything? That's like the difference between an R6 and say a Vulcan. Way different rates, but from a power standpoint you could get in just as much trouble on the Vulcan as you could on a R6.

This is profiling plain and simple. Insurance companies figure if you're riding a sportbike, you're more likely to get hurt....I'm sure this is based on accidents involving sportbikes, which I am sure are more in numbers hence the larger porportion of them involved in accidents...

When I changed my policy last week from my S to my Falco, my premium went up 212 dollars a year. Both bikes are 1000cc, but Aprilia gets nailed as a high perfromance category....

It's a racket I say!!!

Did some shopping through my daughter, she works at an independent insurance agency. Compared same year R11R, R11RS, R11S and R11GS. Got the same rate regardless of model! BMWON ran a couple or articles a few months ago about this subject. Yes, it is profiling. Yes, it is anal accountant mindset. Yes, we are a legally discrimated against minority. We've got three, possibly four options: 1- live with it (with or without b1tching); 2- ride without insurance; 3- pressure the government to enact changes (always a dicey thing getting the politicos involved-you never get what you ask for, and usually a lot that you didn't want); 4- do what commercial deep sea divers did, form our own independent insurance company so we could control rates (ha ha, because we would end up hiring accountants and be back at Option 1).

It's a government supported ripoff no matter how you try to figure your way around it. About the only thing that would really make life any better would be $1000 fines to the uninsured motorists and random police checkpoints looking for insurance cards. Felony driving without insurance, 10 years in the slammer no time off, three stikes and we cut off your feet.

Until insurance is mandatory AND enforced, our rates will be sky high to finance bad cage drivers who don't look for motorcyclists (or bicyclists or pedestrians for that matter).

ps: the BMWON articles brought out one thing; some insurance agencies extend a better discount to new customers. Some of the ON readers found that they got a better rate by switching agents each year than trying to negotiate a lower rate by being loyal to their current agency. Insurance is all about statistics: if we all start switching companies every year they might get the idea (or not).

Progressive car insurance.. I had been with them for three years and my insurance would just get a few dollars lower. I went to the progressive web site logged in and played around with the what if options. I was being charged the same amount for full coverage insurance for my 2000 car or a 2004 honda. So I LOGGED out. I then did a new quate as if I was a brand new customer!!!!!! WHAT THE HELL. About a 300 per 6month differenance. I call progressive and was told that I would have to cancel my original policy of 3 loyal years and start a new one in order to get the lower rate!!

I'm going to do this every 6 months now.

Man, what a hassle if that is the only way to keep your rates down. What ever happened to "I've been accident and ticket free, I am responsible, give me a discount"

In my calls around about my Falco 2 weeks ago, the cheapest rate was for me to stick with Progressive as the other companies rates were 3-4 hundred more a year. And god does it vary state to state.....But it is still better than Hawaii. I paid twice as much for the same bike than what I do here. I lived on Kauai where the accident rate was extremely low, theft was really low but the insurance company could never explain why my rates were higher than Virginia?

I think once the law got involved, it gave insurance companies a legal leverage and there is no regulation on the rate structure. God I hate to think of gov regulation, but what other option is there?

In Virginia, you can bypass the insurance by paying a 500 payment to the state yearly, which in effect gives you liability. But then if you're vehicle is stolen, or you run into a tree you're screwed!

You dont know how good you have it (or perhaps how bad it could be )

Try 1000$ for R1100S in Ontario- age 40+ years, family, 25 years licensed, no accidents 5 + years, highest rating AND a 6 month driving season

200$ for my 87 Riva 200

Rates have gone up for many people 25 % this year, while the government is getting involved to reduce car rates (by limiting access to accident benefits, and removal of the ability to sue)

At age 58, I pay around $300 for the 1999 R1100S and $350 or so for the 2004 CBR1000RR with State Farm. I put the deductible up to a point at which the additional risk I bear is commensurate with the reduction in premium.

Here is a trick: get the state minimum on liability and then buy a liability umbrella that goes over your autos/bikes/home. That way, you reduce your exposure but spread the cost of liability over all potential causes of loss.

Also: make your collision deductable as high as you can stand. Hell, it would be better to put $2,000 in a savings account (and earn some small interest) and put your deductable up to $2,000. If you have a claim, you will have the deductable (savings acc'nt) and will have had lower premium until the claim occurs.

My wife & I have a number of bikes insured with Progressive so we get some good discounts. When we added her 03 Prep last fall I was surprised to see a bill for $350 since I only pay $196 for my Aprilia Futura. Both bikes are 100/300 full coverage with a $250 deductible. It's hard to figure how they come up with the individual rates for each bike model.

UberyXY, normally I would be interested, but my wife is insisting that I get a new bike. she is concerned that my crash was influenced by the condition of the bike.

Thanks for thinking of me though.

Moybin: bike belongs to a business partner of mine. It is one of the special yellow and grey ones made in 99. Has yellow beetle bags. Has been sitting in a heated warehouse we own since 2000. How about I PM you the owners name and email address? I don't know what he wants for it but I know he would be happy to sell it.

PS: I have no financial interest in this sale. I would just like to see the bike back on the road, as the current owner is way too busy for motorcycles anymore.

UberXY, please do PM me. "...too busy for motorcycles anymore."... That's just plain sad. I may not have a life, but I've still got time for motorcycles!

UberXY the owner of the bike wouldn't be named Ken would it? It would be a very funny coincidence if it was. If it is the case, he must be selling off the fleet.

Thumbs up Progressive's been for to me...

'Been hearing all manner of spook stories lately on the Duc list re: increased m/c ins. rates.
I added a second Yam. TDR250 to my Progressive policy last winter - total policy cost for 8 bikes dropped by $12/6 mo. payment period. Me like. But I fear what may be coming this June.
.
Best,

My annual premiums for an '01 S and '01 GS are $175 with Progressive... liability, collision, and comprehensive. $500 deductible.

I'm receiving a homeowners, multi-bike, AMA membership discount. BTW, AMA membership really helps. Rate reduction more than pays for the annual membership fee.

I had a garage claim once and Progressive was more than fair.

Just received the annual bill. The preceding premiums are about 2-3% belowlast year. Ran into the Progressive claims guy today at a bike shop and noted the rate decrease. He said another one is coming this summer and I'll get a few bucks. Said Progressive has a policy of making 4% on the dollar, and if they do better, the policy holders receive the difference.

Wished I'd asked ask what happens if they do worse than 4%.

sfarson, You have h/o's ins. w/Progressive???
I've asked them - not available. Read below:
.
Homeowners Insurance

Progressive sold homeowners insurance in Arizona, Michigan, Illinois, Maryland and Texas beginning in March 2000. In February 2003, we decided to focus on providing insurance for autos and other vehicles. We no longer write or renew homeowners insurance policies.

However, we’ve provided basic information about homeowners insurance below. Be sure to contact your independent agent with specific questions.

I must be doing something wrong!

My online quote from Progressive for the 1100S

"Your 12 month quote is $1589.00"

Maybe I need an agents name to talk too.
