Garmin eMap & V1 users?

I just wired up a cig outlet in order to use my Garmin eMap GPS with my R1100s. I figure most people use the other Garmin units since my searches for eMap related info on this board have come up with little returns.

Now, since my RAM mount arrives Friday, I'm gonna have a fun time figuring how to mount my V1 and my eMap side by side.

Anyone else here run these two gizmos?

You should be able to ram mount each of the them somewhere, but that will get a little cluttered.

My suggestion would be to run the V1 from the tank bag (map case would be best).

I use "the shelf" which mounts above the triple clamp and accomodates both my V1 and my Garmin. Not sure if they make one for an S, but it might be worth looking into.

Shannon, I'm assuming the small gizmo is the audio connector that Valentine sells? If so, do you use an ear bud with it?

I have a Chatterbox HJC-50 and am thinking of wiring in the full face helmet mic/speakers and seeing if these two will interface together.

Right! So in that case, I won't post the pic of the UPS delivery girl when she drops off my mount.

Now, as for the 'technical question'... the damn eMap needs anywhere from 2.6v to 3.3v thus I'd been scouring the internet for something to reduce the voltage to that level with no avail. This is why I ended up using the factory (Garmin) cig lighter adapter which has the nifty voltage reducing circuitry built in. Thus, my thread... what have others done in order to hard wire an eMap / eTrex?

Sergio, brad@bradzimmerman.com has the solution for both on his S. He's told me before who makes the mounts but I forget. They replace the brake and clutch fluid covers. Hopefully he'll see this thread and let you know and post a pick or you can email him. Really nice set up on his bike.

Yeah, I saw the pics with the RAM cover mounts but opted for a slightly different RAM mount because of the clearance issues at full lock.

first off, put your val1 in the tankbag map pocket or mount on top of the tankbag with velcro.
second, wire in a cigarette lighter adapter straight to the battery (don't forget to use a fuse on this and all other accessory circuts) then plug the garmin power adapter into this adapter...viola, hard-wired without pain.
I never liked the look of all that 'lectrical gimmickry hanging off the handlebars and impeding my forward view...the val1 makes a distinctive noise for every kind of band it picks up, so the HARD will give the first, visual clue, then you pay attention to the audio to tell if tyou're detecting a garage door opener, a police radar or an F-16 laser rangefinder (yes a val1 WILL pick up a broad spectrum of laser energy; mine goes off all the tjme around McChord AFB when the EA6-Bs are out and about doing thier target-designator-practice thing)

I'm currently sans tank bag. I'm debating if I really 'need' one or not. I hardwired a cig lighter for the Garmin, may add a dual socket for the Valentine 1, not sure yet.

They'll go straight to Audrey, so I don't think you'll have to mess with them anyway.

Pics of the RAM mount.

I opted for a 'GRAB9' mount which is an angle ball and mounted it to one of the emtpy screw holes under the triple clamp. Anyone know if this is sturdy enough for the weight of the GPS? I don't imagine it would put too much stress on the aluminum.

sergio~
you should be fine. that's not too much weight for those mounts.
besides, when my gismos begin to loosen up, i can see them wiggle and blur. it's not like it just suddenly leaps off the bike. ya just tighten it back up.

the only drawback i can see is that if you decided to someday add the tank bag. i think the mount might get in the way of the bag and your ability to read it with a bag installed.

True, although if that ever comes to pass, I can move the V1 to the tank bag and use the other parts of the RAM mount and relocated the GPS clear of it. I've got the city cases on the bike so I've got quite abit of cargo capacity.
