Hugger Failure Yesterday

I've done a search and read all the history on Illumberger (sp) failures. Who has the most recent exeperience and who had one replaced?

I paid about $225 about 3 years ago and now they are $300!

I heard there was also a redesign or version 2 available.

Warranty is 12 months.
Apparently a disposable part.
Change it out with your oil filter is the policy

DR; do you have the bits of the failed hugger to send back (to England or Germany I'm afraid) ? They are normally pretty good at swapping them even tho' the warranty has expired as long as they haven't been tampered with or 'lightened'. Always found dealing with Ilmberger a positive experience as long as you speak to the right people. Let me know if you have any difficulties.

I've got whats left of Bill's fender. You can see here how it broke, and then how he had to rip it off to get home.

Wow, I don't think we've seen that type of failure from the Ilmberger before. I guess they have been doing some research to see if they can fail is new and mysterious ways. Almost looks like the fender tip got stuck on the tire while backing up, or maybe contacted the swingarm in the front on a big bump. Not good at any rate.

BTW that is the old design. You can tell from the point where the shield and the arm make the transition.

the thing looked like it kinda just bent down and touched the tire. It made a really cool noise that sounded like his transmission was blowing up.

As I've mentioned in my hugger fix, the stock bracket allows for the hugger to bounce all over the place when running over bumps. If you've left the stock shock protector in the front of the hugger will hit that & eventually fatigue the hugger mounting bracket & break it. Additionally, while riding next to a bike running the stock hugger, it's quite apparent that the front of the hugger could even touch the swing arm, hence breaking the hugger mounting bracket. Given this much motion it's also conceivable for the rear to touch the rotating tire & get sucked forward & break, as was observed in this thread.

My reinforcement of the stock bracket eliminates the hugger's movement solving this problem. If you're still running this hugger you should really reinforce the mounting bracket to be safe. It's a nice looking piece, the mounting bracket just isn't stiff enough.

Replacement in process

The good news is that the company will replace it...no questions
asked. The British supplier contacted me and I got a personal note from Julius.

Just need to return the bits.

So apart from a little scare, it appears we're on the road to recovery.

I have huggers on my Ducati, Moto Guzzi and Buell, it seems that the German hugger just sits too close to the tire - as the others have about a 3/4" gap between the hugger and the tire.

I heard they are coming out with a new model. Solenoid activated (Rear) brake deployment. Great for changing underwear!

Depends on which day you catch them.
Plenty people had trouble and got no response,
or a refusal of return or exchange.
Caveat emptor

The system is in place to deal with this issue if you contact the right people and keep the bits for return. Lessons appear to have been learned and this case shows it's actually working.
Those of you with an Ilmberger hugger actually still attached to your S, inspect as part of your pre-riding checks, especially if it's an early model

So who's taking the returns now?
Will they take one that has an obvious crack developing (in the exact location that they've broken in the past), but hasn't actually fallen off and tried to kill someone yet?
