Hi guys;
Was washing my bike today and notice some greese from under the dust boot from the drive shaft.The greese is coming out from the dust boot at the large end toward the engine. Will contact the dealer tomarrow but was wondering if anybody could clue me in first on what it might be.Any help would be quite kind of you... Thanks Rick |

Hi Rick Rear pinion seal. Mine just did the same. When they had my swing arm off they found shot swing arm bearings. If it is your pinion seal have them check the swing arm bearings when it is off. Good luck Rad |

Joc,
Can you describe in more detail what you are seeing? I had some white (lithium)? grease appear at the lip of the dust boot on the engine end of the drive. My dealer told me not to worry about it because it was simply residue from the assembly process. I have not seen enough to indicate a problem, but I'm new to Beemers and trying to learn about the characteristics of these beasts. Is this what you are seeing? Thanks, Jeff |

Hi Rick,
I'm with Jeff, any more description? I'd bet Rad is right, I've seen it often enough on paralevers myself (especially GSs) but since you said grease instead of (gear)oil, I'm kinda wondering too. later roger p.s. Hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but I just talked to my friend Eric, and at only 6400 miles, his valve train gave out (not sure of the root cause yet) and ended up lunching the entire right side of the motor. Only symptom ahead of time was very heavy oil useage. To be fair to BMW, Eric rides exceptionally hard. He's also broken the frames on 2 2V ducs, and had motor issues with one 4V duck. He was hoping the beemer would keep him on the street and out of the service bay more. |

Hi everyone..
Contacted my dealer yesterday (Cal. BMW in Mt. View)..Here is what he told me.What i was really looking at was a small amount of oil that was seeping from the pinion gear seal.When the oil seep out of the dust boot and come in contact with dirt and grime it feels like grease....mmm ok.. They can not take me in untill July 12th for service.Next came the million dollar question..Can i ride it? Shouldn't be a problem they say and just keep i eye on it or if i feel the bike start to "act up" (huh?).The bike need it's 12,000 mile service anyway so i will take it easy untill then.. Here is kind of the strange part.If it is leaking around the pinion seal why would the oil be seeping out of the front of the dust boot(the large end) and not the small end of the dust boot?Someone tell me how oil can run up hill...8^) Thanks everyone...Rick |

Hi Rick,
Its a good question. I _suspect_ that that's where the rotating parts happen to throw the oil. I'll try and pay better attention next time I have one apart - hopefully not mine for any reason that soon ![]() I wish I knew better or for sure. Hopefully someone more up on that will chime in. later roger |

Hi Rick
It sounds exactly like mine, small amount of gear oil mixed with dirt. I also had to wait. My shop guy said no problem. I rode almost another 1,000 miles before they fixed it. Keep an eye on it but make sure they fix it. Rad |

G'day Rick,
I had the same problem with my bike at 12,000K's. I took it to my Dealer who told me that the rear hub had been overfilled with oil at the 10,000 Km service. The hub was drained, correct amount of oil replaced and has been oil tight now for over 15,000k's. Maybe it's worthwhile checking the oil level before changing the seal. |
