OK, I give up ! Does anyone know something about the turn signal algorithm the S uses ? Besides time, does it also use gear changes, RPM, lean angle, all of the above ? Each time I think I have one or more of the functions figured out, I encounter a situation where it does not act as I would expect ?

I think it's time and speed. I've seen it written somewhere...don't remember where.
Sorry. Bob |

I may be wrong but I don't think it uses any of the things you mentioned. I believe it makes use of distance solely when deciding when to turn off the signal. At least, that is what my 2001 does. Now, the exact distance required to turn off the signal I've never tested.

There's a sensor at the rear wheel which measures the times the wheel has passed (if I read it right).
That's why it cancels during driving but keeps blinking when standing still at a traffic light. Hugo |

Hi,
Many years ago a BMW sales man told me that it would stay on for about 250 yards. The only evidence I have to support this is that in the UK on motorway junctions we get a 300,200,100 yard marker posts, and if I switch it on half way between 300 & 200 yards the turn signal goes off as I leave the motorway. Regards, Adrian. |

I think that rpm might have something to do with it. I turned and when they didn't go off right away, I tried pulling in the clutch and revving it up. They went right off.

I recently test rode a R1150R. It appears to have the exact same switch gear as the S. To my surprise the signals did not self cancel. I told the dealer that there must be something wrong with the mechanism and they told me that they were not sure if the R came with self cancelling signals. They made mention that BMW was quirky about adding certain options to certain bikes. Does anyone know for sure if the R is supposed to cancel.
But, to answer your question: if your signals are not self cancelling I would take the bike to the dealer to have it checked. Quote:

I'm sure this is somewhere else on the board, but here I go anyway...
The switchgear, the turn signals, why, why, why, why? Dosen't my right hand have enough to do, with 100% throttle control and 99% of the braking- without having to alter my hand position to hit the turn signal for a safe lan change? I have gotten used to it, but still, WHY? I had a Saab for years, and for 6 months after I got rid of it I looked for the key switch between the seats of my Audi. Saab put it there to lock the shifter - it had a purpose- but BMW, come on, why be so different? ( I can hear the can o' worms opening....) |

Somewhere around 200m is what I have noticed. Initially I didn't realise that it had auto cancelling indicators until I made a note of them after realising I hadn't cancelled them myself. A nice touch after being used to them on Yamahas for year.

I did some informal testing a while back and I think it does include both time and distance. Otherwise, a lane change on the freeway (where you are going 120 ft every second) would cancel in a second or two. My estimate is that it is something like 10-seconds or 200-feet, whichever occurs last.

I don't have my owner's manual in front of me, but it is time and distance.
