Hi Joe
The traffic signal loop systems in the ground are completely adjustable. Your bike is DOT approved and therefore the system must be adjusted in order to trip the signal for your bike. Formally write to the Public Works Department and cc the Traffic Safety Commission and your Mayor. Make sure you explain in detail how you are forced to either make an illegal left turn or right turn placing yourself at risk in the traffic flow. Give them a few weeks then find the name of the Public Works Director and call him/her personally to check on the status of your letter. Don’t let up until it is corrected. Adjusting your bike to solve the problem is not the answer. rad |

I did that when I first moved to the area you wouldn't believe how I got passed from one person to another Finally I got passed to a fellow biker who took care of the problem for me. Now it's years later and someone has readjusted the sensitivity I don't want to start the whole process over again. Maybe I'll try a big speaker magnet I have plenty at work. JOE ![]() |

This is a problem and I agree that it shouldn't be such that the motocycle doesn't trip the circuit. Many cities here have sensitivity that allows bicycles to trigger the light.
I'd get on their case, BIG time. Threaten a lawsuit for being placed at risk, that ought to get them moving. |

I know it can be frustrating dealing with bureaucrats. I work in city government and I know exactly how things get done or don't get done. Departments respond quickest to pressure from above not from below like citizens unless you find a caring and concerned public servant who has extra time. Commissions, councils and board of supervisors respond when approached in writing. ***** flows down hill. When a council member sits down in my office their issue just became my departments number one priority. Politics sucks! Find out who on city council rides a motorcycle and then write them and visit them. It will be fixed the next week. rad |

I just look both ways and run 'em. If the traffic is so low that a car isn't imminently on my butt to trip the light, then it's light enough to sneak thru safely.

Have you guys checked out the strobe function that police/fire/rescue units use? The pickup usually sits on top of the signal support, and their vehicles have a strobe which makes the light turn green. Now, I have heard, that SOMETIMES at night, if you flash your hi-beam quickly a few times it will mimic that and change to green! Just a rumor, heh heh...

Interestingly there was just a news item on the light/strobe function here this morning. There was some concern expressed because people have been buying units that trigger the light this way over the web. I suspect that these will be made illegal in Ontario (Canada) at least, fairly shortly.

I heard somewhere that shutting off the engine and re-starting will trip the light.

Good idea strong magnetic field from starter motor just might do it thanks. ![]() JOE ![]() |

This is to let you guys know the starter trick works. So if your in some strange town and your growing a beard waiting for the light to change. Shut off the motor and restart, if it's a inductive trigger the light should change.

I have a problem sometimes knowing if I tripped the light or not, because around Boston they have delayed lights in some intersections. I'm not shutting down my engine at each intersection just to make sure that I tripped the light.
Anyone has expereince with getting a ticket at such intersection and fighting those? That's what I really care about. Boris |

I have a metal plate in my head, I have to get off the bike and rub my forehead on the ground which trips the light. But I have to get on the bike fast because they turn red fast and it can become a never ending cycle. I felt stupid in the beginning but you get use to the people honking and yelling mean things at you.
If you don't have a metal plate on your head you should get one, this would be the same as straping a speaker to your bike. And the same as the city workers laughing and honking about how long you wait for the light and how much time you waist trying to get them to do something, anything. If they don't have a form for it they are lost. Look both ways, not for cars but cops. And go. |

I've got one of those "boxer-design" hub caps on the rear wheel, which is held in place with two rare-earth magnets (which are very strong). I suspect this may help in triggering some types of signals, as rarely do I have to wait.I find that the approach speed does make a difference though!

Yes this makes sense.
The inductive principle that the sensors work on rely on having a mass of metal moving past them. Either more metal or a higer rate of change of speed will have a more pronounced effect. |

Spacovers, that was the funniest post I have read on this board. You have what it takes to be a SACBORG member, join some of your more articulate breathern and come on over.
