How does one go about adjusting the clutch so as to change just where the engagement point is?
As it is, it engages from about halfway out to full let-go. I should like it to start the engagement process at about one inch from the handgrip, and be fully engaged by 3/4's out. jeff has brand new clutch fluid, too! |

The position where the clutch begins to engage on my S is also near the end of the lever travel (this is independent of the lever position adjustment dial). I think that's what Jeff was referring too(?). As the clutch wears, less ’pull’, or lever travel, is needed to disengage the clutch. Myself, I prefer the adjustability of the cable activated setup of my prior Oilhead. With an 1/8 of an inch of free play when the lever was out on the RS, I always knew my clutch was fully engaged. It doesn’t feel that way on the S. I suspect it's the characteristic of the hydraulic activated clutch.

Funny this topic should come up now. But first, a warning: Do NOT mess with the adjustment screws unless you know what you are doing!!! They shouldn't need adjustment anyway. Use the knob on the lever, or bleed the system.
One thing I've noticed after my drop (the bike was two months at the dealer) is that the clutch feel is different. The clutch got air into the lines during the drop - I suspect the dealer bled the system since the clutch wasn't working when I brought the bike in. I also suspect that more bleeding is in order to restore the clutch feel back to "normal". So you've got new clutch fluid...? -ds |

DavidSoine, sez:
>So you've got new clutch fluid...? Ya, suuure, you betcha! Also you can use the "Elastic bands" [ quaint Brrritish, for our "Rubber Bands' ] overnight on the handelbars, to 'finish bleed' ( allows trapped air bubbles to migrate graviticaly upwards ((assuming your bike is shiny side up)) ) the clutch reservoir. However it is nice to know that the little adjust-o-screw is there, if'n I wanna muck about in there... Thanks! jeff |
