Putting together multiple exposures required 'dodging', a technique using shadow-casting opaque objects on sticks to 'dodge' the light. If you zoom in on the right side of the photo you can see a dodge line at their feet and see where the muzzle of one rifle does not line up correctly with the rest of the weapon. This is due to the spherical aberration of the lens optics distorting the path of light to the emulsion. The negatives were probably glass plates, so I'd guess the tech tried his best to align things and dodged from there.

Astronomers stacked negatives to get higher resolution; now it's done digitally, either by blending individual exposures or by storing the individual counts of photons from different night's observations with a digital sensor array, adding up different observations into a data 'stack'.

I have the original picture and it is in a frame measuring approx 10" x 60". The glass was broken several years ago and it was relegated to a closet by my Grandparents. In some places the print was stuck to the remaining glass, had a couple of tears, and scratches and was faded pretty bad.

My youngest decided he wanted to resurrect it and painstakingly separated the glass from the print with a sharp razor blade, then ran it over my flatbed scanner section by section, reconnected it and touched it up.

We are trying to get it reprinted from the digital image, he thinks he can get it done at his work, if not, he has located inkjet photo paper on a roll and we will print it at home. I have a dye-sub printer also, but it will not accommodate anything that long.

BTW, my Grandfather is the 3rd from the left in the back row, the only one standing whit his hands in front of him.

Nice work. Looks like it is cold outside... How do you keep your lens from fogging when you take the camera out of the warm vehicle?

Ahhh yes, the vehicle was a Cayenne, but they were both out in front of (well nearly so) the Dakota..........

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dakota

I took the family to NYC for Christmas and were staying nearby. The morning trek was through Central Park to the Metropolitan Museum of Art which took us east along 72nd. I had stopped to grab a quick pic of an impressive piece of ironwork while my son and wife forged ahead. As my son was nearing the building's front entrance, snow and ice fell from the roof overhang, showering him. It wasn't until we got into Central Park that Susie realized that the building was the Dakota. My son wondered what was so special about it and we related the story about John Lennon's murder. Turns out he and Lennon share the same birthday....the snow fall must have been Lennon's revenge.
