R1200s Pit Bull Stand Questions

I want to buy a Pit Bull stand for my 07 1200s, I like their stands - great quality as many of you know.

When checking their site, it was suprising to see they have two models for the 1200s, one with the stand lever facing forward and one with the lever facing backward. I understand the space advantage of the stand that faces forward.

What I am trying to figure out is, if you are right handed, which stand should be easier to control the bike with when putting the bike up on the stand and taking it off. If you had the front tire locked into say an LA Chock, Im thinking the forward facing would be the best.

Anyone got a preference using these on their 1200s, would like to hear your opinion.

$179.95

$164.95

Next question, Pit bull makes a front wheel stand for the K1200s, but they dont list one for the R1200s. Can anyone see from the attached photo why the K front stand would not work with the R1200s?

Thank you,

Robert

It might be time for a centerstand?

I suggest getting the BMW rear stand and the pitbull front stand. I like being able to remove the lever after the bike is lifted up. I didn't like the lever on the rear Pitbull stand.

The Pitbull front stand is the same, that is what I have.

Front stand

I have the front R1100S stand from BMW (silver with black rubbers). I don't know what is different, but it works a lot better than the gold/red Pit Bull branded ones. I have seen difficulties several times when the PB ones were used on R11S or R12S bikes.

When I was looking for a stand, people kept saying to just buy the PB one because it was $50 cheaper. I'm really happy I didn't. Pin spacing, rubber hardness, whatever. Don't know the difference but I've used both and seen different PB ones used by several different people, and the BMW one just works better.

Anton,

That sounds like a great heads up on the front. By chance do you have a picture you could post of your bike on the stand?

Thanks,

Robert

MY bike? LOL! I wish.

There's this one:

But it doesn't show much detail. Here's a detail of a different picture:

Nope. I just came here to comment on a friend selling his bike, and haven't gotten around to leaving yet. Why?

Robert, I have Pit Bull stands for both ends of my R12S. The front is the same one I use on other bikes. I went with the forward handle on the rear stand for space considerations, but have used the rear handle on Nate's bike and it is actually easier to lever the bike up. My forward handle is easy enough to use, however when it comes time to lift the bikes weight, it requires more muscle. Not a big deal, but there is a difference. HTH.

Bob, is it a one person job to use a rear stand ? And if so, is the rear or front one easier to use with one person ?

thanks,

geo

Either stand is an easy one person operation. Just insert the spool into the right side of the rear axle.....right the bike using the right handlebar and push down on the Pit Bull lever. Very easy and intuitive, it's just that the lever arm isn't as long on the front handle as on the rear handle so you need a bit more muscle for the front one. May be a bit of a task for a smaller person. Of course, you gotta have the rear stand to use the front one.

RM,

Here are both front and rear views of the BMW rear and Pitbull front stand on my r1200s.

Notice how you can pull the lever and make this nice and stubby.

You can get the BMW rear stand for 20% off at Chicago BMW. Part number (I'll get back to you...)

I think I'll go with the front lever rear stand for Mary's S. I have the front stand from using it on the KRS bikes.

Just curious as your picture was of an R1100s and I wondered if it was the same stand, or if it was different at all on the r1200s versus r1100s. Is that front stand the same part number for either bike?

I've never seen a front sport stand specifically listed for the R12S, other than the insanely-priced workshop stand. In my picture is the R11S sport stand, BMW part 99 99 0 005 289. Using it on R1200 models, it functions exactly as it does on R11, K, or whatever. Which means, it works well. I use it on every nose-heavy BMW model there is.

Actually the one thing that I would change is that it lifts a bit too high. On bikes where I want to lift the front wheel with the bike on the centerstand, it lifts enough that the back wheel touches down. With the R11S stand design, this happens if you leave the rear sport stand in the lowest position (you'll see in the photo that the rear wheel is basically on the ground, and the stand is set low). On an R12S this isn't an issue, of course.

BTW I'm not trying to say that the PB stand isn't usable. It is, and obviously you're not having any trouble with it, but it takes a bit more fussing with. I've used both on the R12S. Ivan's pit crew had difficulty with theirs and modified it. In Nate's pit last summer, the gold one was relegated to inactive duty whenever possible. I forget what San Jose uses but I'm pretty sure it's not the gold one. However, those are race teams with high demands. For someone not in a shop or race environment, you can take more time with things.

BTW the R12S rear stand you show is 71 60 7 698 075. The other option from BMW is the shop stand 90 88 6 363 980 which has bearings in the axle support (to let you turn the wheel, important when installing tire warmers) and wheels to let the unit roll on the ground. But it's very expensive.

I think I bought the Pit Bull front stand because I could not find the BMW front stand or part number at the time.

Of the part numbers above, the rear stand does come up in a search (like through Chicago BMW's on-line ordering system) but the front part number does not. So I ended up with the Pit Bull stand. You do have to be somewhat careful with it and make sure the both forks are centered properly or it looks like one could drop off which could result in general unpleasantness in the garage..

The 99 99 number? It's good. $215.

Thanks everyone for your replies!!!

CK, now that you have the BMW rear stand, would you still buy it over the Pitbull?

Robert
