S1000RR, smart move/good addition

If, BMW can keep the price of the S1000RR in the $13K to $17K range, I feel it will sell quite well! I feel there are people out there who want/desire/like exclusivity in the big bore 1000cc multiple cylinder “sport bike” market, but all that’s really available is the MV Augusta, which is great, but pricey/small dealer network.

Also, a friend of mine, “a well heeled avid sport bike rider was looking for new bike” and tried my 12S for consideration, which he liked, but prefers in-line 4’s. I suggested he try the current K series, (he did) but did not like its weight & long wheel base. Anyway, he said all that’s really out there for him is MV, “which, he likes & could afford, but also feels it’s a bit too pricey for what ya get”, or just get a more generic/common/everyone has em GSXR, Honda, or Yamaha. With this in mind, if BMW can make this new S1000RR perform equal/same/similar to Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, in the same way MV has, I feel BMW can capture buyers like my above friend and others, for it will offer them something different, unique, along with a typically good and established dealer network.

One reporters opinion……………………..

Maybe it will work. Maybe not. MV's are Italian and have a heritage of exclusivity to draw upon. When you buy a MV, you're buying a marque that only appears on very high-end exotic bikes. It's like a Bimota. OTOH, the roundel appears on an awful lot of very pedestrian and relatively low-cost bikes. Unless the S1000RR has something that truly ups the ante beyond, say a CBR1000RR, I don't see very many who really want to spend $6K more for essentially the same bike but with roundel. If BMW can hold the price close and keep the quality high, then the odds improve. I don't think they can - their cost structure is just too high. But who knows.

I'm betting the bike won't be very mainstream anyway, in price or componentry. It will be much more boutique, have very high-end suspension and bodywork, and be sold in relatively small numbers simply for Superbike homologation, ala the R7 and 1098R. And with a price well north of $20K.

- Mark

As long as there are fanboys who think the roundel make the bike the best thing since sliced bread regardless of price, BMW will sell the bike.

No names.

+1
There are also board members who seem to have some inside info that this bike won't be anymore than $13k, which should be a competitive price if its got the right stuff on it. as for me, I am looking for, Ohlins F&R, Brembo monoblocks, that digital dashboard, a few CF farkles and a price below $17k. I assume the exhaust will be ugly, and will need an Akrapovic ASAP. I doubt I am going to see those components at $13k, and if the intent of BMW is to keep the price down, then i am guessing the resulting "pedestrian" version might seem a long way off what is desirable to me. Time will tell.

It always got me... Why BMW's are so damn expensive. Every time I've asked they say it's the Dollar to Euro rate. But wait... What about Triumph? The Dollar to pound rate is even worse. But there bikes are with the Japanese prices. So, from what I can tell is BMW is making them expensive because they can. They think there brand is "better" than eveyone else. Which is bull****... You can't buy a bad brand of motorcycle unless you get some Chinese stuff. So I do believe BMW can make this bike cost only $13000. I know they can. And they would be fools not too.

When I look at my R1200S compared to the Triumph ST Sprint that I was considering I can easily see why it cost more, having said that BMW’s motorcycles are still over prices, their cars even more so.

Dude, lets get one thing straight,BMW's in the US are peanuts, everyone else in the world has to pay the going rate, you guys in the States do not,i've no doubt there are marketing reasons,i've been trying to buy a K1200s here in the Uk,only to see US prices are anything between 6/10,000 dollars cheaper,so forget the expensive BM line,if Europe could buy Beemers for the same price as you guys their market share would go through the roof.

Germany has a huge government that makes ours look like a tea party...you're supporting their overbearing regulations, social systems, etc.

I got my fill (die Nase Voll!) while living there for 19 months, paying their outrageous taxes and suffering their constant intrusions into my private life...I'll take our "less corrupt" form of government any day.

19 months and you're an expert?

Uh uh.

Less corrupt?

Uh uh.

*snicker*

Ever since 9/11 you Americans have had your private lives and human rights violated more in the last 5 years than most European gov would in an entire lifetime. And you don't even see it happening.

Your administration has quite effectively turned the USA into something scarely close to a police state where freedom of speech is a joke and the right to a fair and speedy trial last about as long as it takes to ship someone to Gitmo.

And you still herald your so-called freedom in ignorance to all that want to hear, or don't. Cause all they did was make it harder on terrorists, right? None of it applies to or is of concern of Joe Blow, right?

Uh uh.

Keep dreaming. Ignorance is bliss. In fact, Washington depends on it.

You are right and it’s getting worse as each year goes by. Bottom line is, this is not the America of twenty years ago. Yea, I know things change and all that bla, bla, bla, but the bottom line is, is that our freedom, core values and standards have changed and it’s frustrating to witness. Oh well, as history has shown all great countries rise, fall and change for various reasons.

what cheese goes goes best with that whine....

I love sport bikes, I wish they would be ridden more resonsible.... but they are toys and if no one is put at harm (key point with me). I would love a Hayabusa, saw a brnd new 06 asking $9200, beautiful blue grey. Nice riding posiition, I really like that bike.
