strangely enough, this just happened to me this morning on the way into work. traveling from highway 287 to highway 80, on a service road, the rear felt all squishy, like a flat. I could shimmy the bike and it was moving all over. Pulled over, all four lug nuts half way out. scared the crap out of me.
Used the lug wrench and spark plug wrench to get them as tight as I could. guess I better track down a torque wrench. ![]()

Is 105NM the same for the R1100S? If so, how much is that in ft. lbs.?

Make sure you're using the OEM bolts too. I had a friend would put some nice chrome wheels on a vintage pickup and used some type of chromed bolt. Then torqued to spec and 15 miles later all 4 wheels were equally wobbly. Crazy! So I've heard of it happening but that's the only case in which it wasn't installer error. I suspect whoever last put the wheel on that bike didn't do it to spec.

That is what my mother always told me...
![]() I used an extension bar when I tightened the bolts after changing my tires. I didn't have a torque reading on it, but the three foot length gave me lots of leverage. I am not sure of the physics, does using a socket wrench extension (from the wrench to the socket) reduce your force substantially? I would think that the longer the extension the greater the flex... whatever, I'll just make sure to check the bolts more often. and get a torque wrench.

Believe it or not there is a formula somewhere, although I haven't seen it for years. The formula takes into account the length of extension versus original torque specification. Perhaps in this brave new world of disposable goods and cost versus quality manufacturing tolerances it has fallen by the wayside.
Seems at least an annual or every six-month check of critical fasteners should be as routine as our obsession with oil changes.
