R12S cams

In my never ending quest to improve my equipment, I am now considering trying out some cams to see if they help or hinder. No I don't need more power, and my Wossner upgrade has not left me lacking, I just want to keep playing, and performance enhancements are part of the game for me.

I know there are a few off the shelf items, available from M-Tec and Max BMW, but the details on what they achieve are pretty thin. I have also found a few places that will grind new profiles on your stock cores, of course you have to know what you want! I quizzed Chris H on this topic and he said they had never messed with the cams because they aren't in the allowable mods for the racing they are doing.

Anybody have some thoughts or links for cam profiles are alternate cams for the R12S? Spare the flames

Well, IMHO (if hot cams means greater lift) one needs hot valve springs (nobody does it) AND some hot valve rockers as well (ditto). I've already damaged mine (both) by riding ...er...the torque (at 9800 rmp, blame that RB3 +1K rev-limiter... he he).

But before spending dollars consider the fact numero uno: in what rpm band are you expecting fireworks? If in the upper (+7K)...get a Duc (or a KTM).

That said I've addressed a mail long long long time ago to Timo (the Great) asking the full combo (cams+rockers+springs), but Timo never replied (obviously having nothing to say).

That's what I was thinking about what cams are going to yield on your bike. When we switched while riding the other day, that Wossner mod really was noticiable with an additional kick right aound 5500 rpm. I any cams available aren't going to much below that and will probably be an upper rpm boost, maybe 6500 to redline. HP Tuning Parts had cams, springs and followers but their website has been offline for quite a while. I can't find much of anything so far on the web.
Frankly, rather than cams, that Max BMW final drive assembly with the 2.91 gear ratio is more interesting. Only raises rpm at 70 by about 600 rpm but I bet the acceleration and wheelie potential is a blast.

i was actually considering this as well, its not cheap though and I am not sure if it is within my mechanical prowess. how am i gonna chase SKRR''s if i drop top speed to 150?

I thought the goal was to have them chasing you?

I would just get the complete assembly with the lower gears installed. It's not that much more money-what's a few hundred when you're between $1,500-2,000.
That would be the ultimate gear change-instead of swapping out the rear or countershaft sprocket to change gearing, you've got a 2.62 rear and a 2.91, full assemblies. One sits on the bench, full of lube and ready to go. Changing out the whole assembly is a breeze. I've pulled mine back a few times already, once to change the fluid and to grease the splines at 6,000 miles. The only thing left holding it on at that point is the Paralever pivot bolt.

part #1 is $614, which is doable, the MaxBMW kit is a bit more, i'm not sure how much is necessary.

the website says $450 for seals shims and flange, why would you have to replace the flange? (#2)

Naw, I'd just pop for the whole assembly because being able to make the swap relatively easy is part of what makes it interesting. After $3K for CF wheels, we can't skimp out now! Of course, I need to find a job first. But for $1,940, it's definitely cool:

"Final Drive Upgrades for R1200 S
Options available to purchase and install gear set, ring and pinion into existing final drive unit or to purchase and install a complete final drive assembly. Please visit Performance Upgrades page for parts and labor breakdown for each option.

R1200 S Performance Drive Parts and Labor Costs
2.82 / 2.91 Ratios available for S

Option 1: Gear Set Replacement $1533
Option 2: Final Drive Replacement $1940"

its a big difference between $600 and $2000, and its not about skimping for me, but about how often I would swap it out. I would either like it and leave it on for good, or not and take it off. i just wonder how many of those seals and shims get trashed in the disassembly or whether its just BMW edict to replace them when you disassemble the drive. I am interested though.

I think the shims are one thing-the seals probably should be swapped out.
The actual swap of assemblies is less than an hour operation. Like my upcoming ride to Indy, I'd put the 2.62 on-go for ride with you up 97, put the 2.91 on.
