R1200S - luggage installation instructions?
Hi,
I just got a set of R1200S luggage and all mounting hardware. However, there are no instructions for actually mounting the rails to the frame, especially drilling the hole in the bodywork (gulp!). Has anyone done this themselves? Scanned instructions? Helpful links? Tips? Good with tools ... but I want the "hole drilling" to go well. Cheers, Ian

On the inside of your body work if you look real closely, are BMW markings onto where to drill holes. This must of been maybe what they intended in the first place when they decided to go ahead with production but somehow decided not to go with the option of luggage. Its only when everyone started screaming that they released luggage and everyone assumed it was a tacked on after thought but they intended in the first place to do this, but didn't. Anyway if you look inside of the back panels you will see where to drill. Start with a small drill, locater and work up in size

By the way where are you from and what do you do for a job?
Your profile says nothing. I'm just interested to know. Last edited by Kieran R1100S; 08-17-2009 at 11:34 PM.. |

Ian, wait til you have all the parts you need and knock this job out in one sitting. You don't want to have to remove the panels each time to install something. You'll need to remove them to drill them, to mount the bracket and then the passenger footpegs. The rubber pads are marked with a big L and R for left and right. Install them on the bags but keep the hardware just loose enough that you can move the pads around. You'll figure out the adjustments when you mount the bags and then torque down the hardware on the pads. Do you have the locks coded for your ignition key? That was an easy job, but all the instructions I saw really sucked.

I identify, articulate, and fix problems that inhibit business growth. I've had my R1200S for just over a year and I play at least half a dozen instruments - more if I feel like it. I ask lots of questions, and try to ask them only once. I answer questions to which I know at least one answer. I have an abiding respect for people with the self confidence and capacity to say "I don't know, but I'll find out". Just plain old "I don't know" isn't useful. I'm a big fan of Australia and have had the pleasure of cultivating friendships with people from Australia and New Zealand ... but I have yet to visit either. I do at least one thing every day that scares me. Cheers, Ian

I used a step drill in my milling machine. But you only need a good hand drill and someone to hold the panels. The plastic machines cleanly.
BIG CAUTION. The bolts that hold the rails to the frame come with locktite on them. It's too hard. Problem is that the nuts located on the inside of the frame are put in there with chewing gum or something....they'll spin easily and then you can't tighten the rails and the only remedy is to replace the rear frame and start again. So....clean all the loctite off the bolts and then install new loctite when they are ready to go on. I've installed several of these now and this is the only thing that can come out of hiding and bite-cha in the butt bad.

I've got something scary for you... .. . just use an oxy-acetolene torch to makes them holes in your body work and mount those brackets.
![]() Please post picks when you are finished not matter how the job turns out. I would like to see how these mounts look on the R1200S.

Back in the day, I made this post with directions on how to install hard cases. I have the reinforcement bar and the upper pins (through holes in my fairings) on my bike, but none of the other hardware yet.

Ah, thanks. I didn't search "hardcases" (limited myself to "luggage" and panniers").
Apologies for asking a question that had already been answered. I hope the update is helpful to others as well. Cheers, Ian
